Chris Lund held on burglary charges in Lyman county escaped from Cavoma county jail after being allowed to go to the jail grounds in slippers. A deputy sheriff granted him permission for a short outdoor step and returned to find the lantern and the prisoner missing. Efforts to recapture him have been unsuccessful.

Bryant May 1 In the last year or two this town has seen fires causing a total loss near 75000 dollars. Citizens now see the need for a waterworks system. The city council plans a spring assessment and a special election to vote on bond issuance for a waterworks plant.
Beresford, S. D., May 1. Two small fires occurred yesterday. A Krueger Bros. house burned and a large barn owned by William Wundert burned. Causes are unknown and insurance was small. Theodore Nelson, a young county farmer, dropped dead Sunday night while preparing to enter his buggy at Mission Hill church. He had recently married.
Sisseton S D April 80 strong likelihood that the Indian appropriation bill will pass this session restoring annuities cut off in 1862 totaling nearly $2,000,000. Two thousand Indians on the reservation here and about 500 at Devils Lake. Major J R Brennan at Pine Ridge agency in Washington for grazing leases conference and seeks raise of Indian police salaries from 10 to 15 and officers from 15 to 25 per month.
After months of search, a daughter of Louis Lundstrom living in Sweden is named as the heir to an estate of about 6000 dollars. The probate court in Yankton hopes to stem fake claim letters. The Swedish consul in St Paul aided the tracing, with Hon. FE Erickson of Salt Point to represent the heir.

In Huron South Dakota May 2 high winds and recent heavy rains disrupted seeding for several days though overall weather was favorable. Moisture was ample before the weekend downpours leaving low ground too wet to work. Early grain shows good growth and farmers plan a week of dry weather to finish seeding with flax and corn contingent on broken land and future conditions.
Representatives of Omaha brewing companies visited Bonesteel to assess local conditions for a brewery. They praised the town’s barley, pure spring water nearby, and potential profitability. Negotiations with eastern partners for a flour mill and a brick yard were also reported.

Owing to last minute mis understanding the sale of Corys Public Opinion to Charles Ashton of Ponca Nebraska fell through. Ashton demanded that Cory and Ransom stay out for five years but the bidders refused. Ransom and Cory will continue the publication. Ashton returned to Nebraska.

After the April term nears end Judge Carland imposes sentences on Indian defendants for liquor violations and related crimes. Herman Winterchaser receives four months in jail and a 100 fine, while Frank Meeter gets three years in state penitentiary for liquor on the reservation and assault with intent to kill. Philip Hawk Track and Long Crow each face four months or six months in jail plus 100 or 1000 fines. Daniel Redwater, Peter Tucker, Brown Lakes the Gun receive six months to two years in various jails or penitentiaries with fines.
The Aberdeen internal revenue office estimates one carload of beer arrives daily, totaling 1 920 gallons per day.
