Petition filed in federal court seeks bankruptcy proceedings for Plankinton Bank. Fogarty's Saloon on Main and Second streets robbed again, third time in six to eight months, with entry through the shed and cellar door pried open. Several cases of beer and champagne missing. whisky barrels present but not confirmed as opened.
A blood hound brought from Sioux City followed scents linked to a Fogarty saloon burglary. The dog traced routes through fair grounds and to a barn before losing the scent, with further trials promising new developments. Sheriff Swindler and others consider purchasing the animal to assist criminal cases locally.
At the upcoming commission meeting the board will consider enlisting aid for buying a hound to be used strictly for county property, outlining the scope and purpose of the purchase.
The April forecast predicts a series of storm periods from late March into the month. Expect freezing and frosts in northern sections, followed by warm spells and April showers. The university selects W L Dow Sioux Falls as architect for a new 50 by 124 foot brick four story dormitory for 75 to 80 roomers. It will house music and art departments with a gym YWCA room and large basement dining hall.
Powers announces dates for the state encampment of the G A R W R C and S of W in Mitchell. The gathering will run Tuesday through Thursday June 19 20 and 21. Citizens and local groups must plan to welcome and support the visitors and handle expected crowds. The event is described as the largest in state history and requires broad hospitality and preparation.
Conductor John B Tompkins suffered a broken left collar bone in an Edgeley railroad accident while coupling cars on a train loaded with immigrants movables. He was jammed but brought to Aberdeen and home this forenoon with hopes no further injury will develop. Tompkins formerly lived in Aberdeen and runs into Mitchell over the Milwaukee road.
D. W. Burright and A. A. Boynton toured Armour to follow the sale of lots in new towns planned along the Milwaukee road extension into Charles Mix county. Burright said the line will not pass existing towns but will run through the county, approaching several old settlements.
The American League faces low turnout as only fourteen members attend a Monday meeting. President Thompson presides, denies Pettigrew’s role, defends non-partisanship, and urges a larger crowd before continuing league business. The move to publish his speech in the Gazette prompts further crowd-building efforts.
