Carrie Nation spoke in Huron South Dakota denouncing the Republican Party and Speaker Joseph Cannon calling him that old devil and predicting his future fate. She praised Taft while lambasting the State Anti Saloon League and the Masonic lodges, then sold books and hatchets after the address. A local elevator buyer, Mr Manning, injured his hand when a car crushed a stone he held.
Governor Vessey selects a broad slate of delegates for the Missouri river meeting to be held here at month end. The list includes M. J. Chaney Wakanda L N Crill Elk Point C J Bach Hurley James Halley Rapid City I W Seaman Mitchell B H Sullivan Plankinton and many others from across the state and region. Additional names will be added before the meeting date.
Worthing South Dakota March 24 A search continues for the body of Millard Dickens two year old son of Mr and Mrs J W Dickens who wandered from the yard while his mother answered a telephone call Neighbors dammed Beaver Creek to slow flows but the swift melt has the creek running like a mill race now subsiding and officials believe the body will be recovered in a few days
South Dakota Central railroad stockholders in Sioux Falls elected F. L. Maytag of Newton Iowa as president. New vice presidents are Joseph Kirby and G W McArthur of Sioux Falls. secretary Geo M Root of Chicago. treasurer I L Bratager of Sioux Falls. Frank I Cummings remains traffic manager and general superintendent. Sherman ceded leadership to focus on timber interests.
Jacob Schmidt, about a mile east of Mitchell, died yesterday morning by placing a shotgun between his knees and blowing off the top of his head while seated on the bed. He was found by his son shortly after. Schmidt had lived alone on the farm since his wife’s death about a year ago and was believed to be suffering from melancholy.
Aberdeen S D March 24 The trial of B S Stephens for the murder of David Mackenzie son of cattle king Murdo Mackenzie began in Selby Walworth county court. No jurors yet at noon and more panel likely as defense relies on self defense and depositions from witnesses outside the state.
Vermillion South Dakota March 24 after daily services since February 16 the Bromley-Myers evangelistic meetings concluded last night A local revival leaflet praises results including happier homes debts paid and reuniting families The evangelists proceed to Centerville to push saloon removal and will leave the Vermillion tabernacle up for Carrie Nation’s visit next Wednesday with a lecture on the tabernacle platform
Two Chicago professionals Dr. J. W. Birkland and Dr. J. E. Reynolds were indicted by a federal grand jury in Sioux Falls for allegedly violating the Lacey Act while duck hunting in South Dakota two years ago. They face hearings to determine surrender to South Dakota authorities for trial. A warrant was issued for a third Chicago man also charged in the same indictment. authorities have not yet been advised of his arrest.
Sioux Falls outlines a meeting of the Republican state committee called by Willis C. Cook to set the date and venue for the state convention in accordance with the state primary law after the June 7 primaries.
In the Dakota Wesleyan University contest R. B. Tibbetts won first with Abraham Lincoln. Samuel Marble took second for Benedict Arnold and Orlando Hornung third for Universal Peace. Tibbetts will represent the school at the state contest in Huron in late May. The Daedallans hosted a banquet for the winner after the event.
Egan lodge No. 71 I O O F won a regional contest in Madison South Dakota on Friday night. They entered the competition to perform the initiatory degree and after a special team performed the work they claimed the cup pending a second victory to retain it under the three match rule.
Huron South Dakota reports lively interest as delegates are chosen for the State Laymen's missionary convention to be held in Mitchell March 29 to 31. County meetings are under way and the event is described as one of the largest and most interesting in state history.
Pierre South Dakota March 24 The supreme court opened with only old October term cases to clear the docket. The April term calendar is printed and numbered 110 making it the heaviest opening term in the court's history. The court has changed its hearing method to stretch arguments across several days with intervals between rather than hearing all at the start.
William Moore of Ohio abducted his 6 year old daughter from his former wife Mary L. Moore in Colman after learning of her remarriage to Albert I Deitz. He carried the child to a carriage and left, with authorities expecting he may seek custody in Ohio.
Dr Joseph Foy assistant state veterinarian from Centerville South Dakota subdued an enraged steer in Putnam grove after a fierce chase. He and his brother tried lassos revolvers and mounted defense as the animal charged repeatedly finally dying within six feet.
Mitchell March 23 27 freshmen ringleaders in a class prank at Dakota Wesleyan University clipped sophomores hair and branded them with iodine. The faculty issued an ultimatum and temporarily suspended the ringleaders while petitions for reinstatement circulate among upperclassmen.
In Sioux Falls on March 22 the state moves the U S Supreme Court to rule on South Dakota anti trust law used against Central Lumber Co of Minneapolis with ranks of branch yards in the state. The case claims price cutting and discrimination to crush independents, with the company appealing a state high court ruling upholding the law.
In Buffalo South Dakota on March 22 Frank Gilbert counts dynamite caps when Max Keene lights a pipe. A sharp report scatters caps about but none explode. The blast is from a revolver cartridge hidden in Keene’s pipe and shatters the pipe while burning his face slightly.
In Deadwood South Dakota on March 23 16 year old Woodbury Cooley collapsed with heart failure during a school picnic atop White Rocks 800 feet high. He reached the summit to fetch sandwiches for a friend and died almost instantly after gasping as classmates and a teacher watched. Cooley had recently moved with his parents from Benton Lake Minnesota.
Belle Fourche South Dakota March 23 Ber nice Shroyer and Asa C Ames under arrest charged with sheep stealing in two offenses Shroyer loaded five head into a sheep wagon on the Garfield McCoy ranch and tried to sell them Ames took 49 head from Bronson and Rough the sheep wandered during January storms and Ames is said to have appropriated them.
Elk Point South Dakota reports two weddings last Wednesday. John Kalstad, son of Mr and Mrs Torger Kalstad, married Miss Sigma Peter son, daughter of Mrs Thale Peterson, at the bride’s mother home in Brule Township with Rev P J Reinertson officiating. Albert J Surdey and Miss Ina B Selby, both of Elk Point, wed here by Justice Ira L Nichols.
J. T. Donaldson aged 84 died yesterday at the state asylum for the insane at Yankton. A native of Norway born in 1826, he homesteaded near Elk Point after arriving in 1870, was sent to the asylum in 1875, and his funeral was held in Elk Point today.
Rapid City citizens voted for the commission form of government by 297 against 42 for the plan. Support from liquor interests influenced the outcome as tensions ran high during the campaign.
Sioux Falls March 21 The hearing on reducing passenger fares from 3 to 2 cents per mile resumes before special master J Howard Gates at the state railroad commissioners. The state argues the cut is not confiscatory and that South Dakota rail traffic warrants the lower rate.
Watertown reports Adjutant General C. H. Englesby asking company commanders for encampment preferences for the citizen soldiers. A war department note says if the guard leaves the state it must go to Sparta Wisconsin, likely late September, challenging farmers. Dell Rapids infantry and another Dell Rapids unit have been mustered, making three local military companies.
Sioux Falls March 21. Farmers lumber companies with $200,000 capital organized the Farmers' Lumber association of South Dakota. Elected officers for the year: President A Berg Baltic, Vice President C J Erickson Howard, Secretary Treasurer William H Menze Geddes. Expected broad membership by next annual convention.
In Deadwood South Dakota on March 21 Judge Rice issued a temporary injunction against Terry Peak Miners Union. The order bars use of the word scale against nonunion workers and prohibits intimidation or interference with Golden Reward company employees. Pickets are limited as armed guards protect company property.
Aaron Kelly of Bridgewater celebrated his 98th birthday observed as the oldest resident in the area. Born in Elmira New York in 1812 he has lived in Bridgewater for 25 years and still walks downtown on Main Street. He aims to reach a full century.

Richard Bullock known as Deadwood Dick is seriously ill at the Venice home of Mayor Elkins who once served as his messenger on the Lead South Dakota to Omaha bullion run. Bullock is 65 with a single eye nicknamed Deadeye before adopting his best known sobriquet Deadwood Dick.
Wakonda D. March 21 Sam Artz living near Wakonda marketed two hogs which up to the time sold had raised 169 pigs for him. Their combined weight was 1,260 pounds and he received for them 127.26 dollars at a price of 10.10 dollars per hundredweight.
Rev. F W Stevens of Yankton Congregational church uncovers a broad scheme of clerical fraud linked to supposed Chaldean church schools hospitals and orphanages. He shows no such institutions exist and warns that credentials are issued to push graft that diverts funds from foreign missions and totals hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Edward McCoy released from Sioux Falls penitentiary last fall was bound over to the circuit court on burglary charges after stealing a gold watch a pearl necklace shoes a razor and other items from the Thorson farm. He was tracked by rubber boots carried by the thief and located in the Hicks cornfield with Sheriff Quien involved in the pursuit.
Governor Vessey reappointed all members of the state charitable and penal institutions' board of investigation. The appointees include Carrie Cleveland of Carthage L B Eastwood of Watertown and Emmet Cook of Huron. John Worseth of Vienna joins the state five stock commission to fill J W Long's vacancy, and A C Byrum of Onida is named Sully County judge to fill Judge Andrew McFall's vacancy.
In a dispute at De place a minister used a hammer to subdue a drayman who produced a club to intimidate him. The drayman was left with a bandaged head and the minister faced no charges as he acted to protect himself. WW Huron Woman Gets Fortune reports Mrs. J. H. Sutphen, of Huron South Dakota, must appear in New York to claim a share of a $50,000,000 estate linked to General Lyons and his wife, founders of Mount Holyoke College. The estate is in England and to be distributed among Lyons brothers and their heirs with Sutphen identified as Allen M. Lyons’ daughter.
Governor Vessey spoke at a rural school officers and teachers meeting, urging stronger support for farm boys’ education. Mitchell notes a fall boys corn contest planned by County Superintendent Brown with Lincoln county’s Superintendent Lawrence to initiate the program and districts to fund prizes.
Mrs. Edgar Hornby wife of Moody county auditor died Sunday morning March 13 from appendicitis. Born in Moody county in 1880 she married in 1908. Funeral services will be held at the opera house in Egan today.
Sheriff Laughlin of Pierre South Dakota secured a governor’s requisition to apprehend Bert Thomas wanted on a forgery charge. He allegedly forged his Aunt Rose Cooper’s name on a $50 bank order, gained funds, and fled to Michigan where he was arrested.
Bridgewater D. March 19. A farmer sows grain while a neighbor gathers leftover corn from last fall. Spring planting began three weeks earlier and the crop is in prime condition for the season.
