Local authorities uncover a concealed passage beneath the city park following a tip. Investigators map the tunnel network and seal access points while awaiting structural assessments. No injuries reported at this time.
Gregory S D March 17 The Harben drug store was destroyed by fire following a gasoline explosion from a lighted match. The building burned rapidly while Mrs Harben fled through the back door and Mr Harben and the man who dropped the match escaped via the front. Loss to building $1 800 stock $5 000 with $2 500 insurance.
William Dunning, driver for Barrett and Giard, disappeared after a raft crossing accident in a ravine where one horse drowned. The ravine was dragged with no trace found. He claimed Nebraska ties and a Lincoln area family. His whereabouts and kin could not be located.
Centerville reports farmers north of town have started plowing with seeding to begin this week. If weather stays fine this spring it should be a record breaker for early seeding and field work, the strongest start in a decade.
Dell Rapids South Dakota March 17 The Home National bank opened for business after receiving charter number 9693 from Washington. It has a $50,000 capital, 34 stockholders two thirds local, and occupies the remodeled Cooley block. The town now hosts four first class banks, including the older Dell Rapids State, First National, and Granite City banks with combined capital of $120,000 and deposits of $547,166.57.
Four families arrive in Le Beau South Dakota ready to cross and select claims in the recent land drawing. About twenty claim winners are now in town to be among the first on the ground. Some families have household goods en route.
Huron South Dakota March 17 Miss Mae Pyle wins first prize in the Kent oratorical contest at Huron college with subject Bolivar receiving 25 dollars cash and a gold medal. Leo Gorah takes second prize 15 dollars cash and a silver medal. Harold Andrews earns third prize 5 dollars.
The Iowa Supreme Court handed down rulings including reversals for McDermott v Radley Cahill v Illinois Central Railroad Young v Inman Nelson Stain v McAuley and Eggert v Lockwood affirmed on appeal Sheldon v Crane Wyman v Passmore Ashford Meyer Smith Lumber v Sisters of Charity Peitzman v Peitzman Norwood Coal Seidlitz v Jackson Younker v Western Union Telegraph and Rapp v Linebarger.
In Kansas City on March 17 John P. Cudahy the millionaire club man facing assault charges against Jere F. Lillis president of Western Exchange bank did not appear. The municipal court continued the case and the judge proposed dismissal though the city attorney pressed for continued action.
Aberdeen South Dakota March 12 B F Stephens pleads not guilty before Judge Bottum at Selby in the murder of David Dode Mackenzie at LeBeau last December. His attorney seeks time to secure out of state depositions and trial is set for March 22 with the jury ordered to appear. Mackenzie was the son of Murdo Mackenzie the cattle king.
Mrs J W Martin wife of Mayor Martin suffered serious injuries when a small can of alcohol exploded in Watertown South Dakota. She was taken to a hospital where care is being given to prevent permanent disfiguration. She is described as one of the city’s elderly ladies of note.
Mitchell March 12 Nothing has been heard of Rev Albert Evans since his disappearance more than two weeks ago. His wife and brother have searched earnestly. Reports claim jewelry and another woman were involved, but those statements are untrue. Inquiries into England and Canada yielded no trace. Search efforts continue.
Bridgewater South Dakota notes a new railway venture after Sioux Falls and Western railway company files articles in Pierre with a 1 million dollar capital. The line would run 126 miles from Sioux Falls to Wheeler costing about 3 million, placing Bridgewater on a direct path for a second road after past surveys including an electric line idea.
State Fire Marshal Frank Craft concludes inquiry into the March blaze in Ashton South Carolina that destroyed five business houses and a hotel. The fire started in a saloon and rumors of incendiary origin persist as officials hold back disclosed facts while many expect arrests.
Pierre South Dakota March 12 In the supreme court opinions were handed down today in several cases including McCoy Hellen Scanlon vs Andrew T Rocket etc Potter county and Whiting Great Northern Railway Co vs Loonan Lumber Minnehaha county affirmed The railroad sought higher charges for a coal shipment held in transit at Jasper Minnesota than the Sioux Falls rate billed The circuit court ruling against the railroad was affirmed with Judge Haney dissenting.
Bert Mc Laughlin, Henry S D, left his wife at Minneapolis Union Station after asking to be excused a moment to buy a cigar. He carried 100 in cash and a 4000 certificate of deposit. Mrs. McLaughlin waited over two hours, alerted police, and was sent to Travelers Aid. Detectives search for him after their Princeton visit.
The German Baptist Hospital association for the Dakotas is organized in Emery. It plans to secure a hospital for the benefit of about 5,000 German Baptists in North and South Dakota. Officers elected include President Rev R Hack Madison Vice President Rev Mr Heringer Eureka Secretary Rev Mr Pfeiffer Bridgewater Treasurer Rev Mr Dallman Emery.
F. B. Gannon president of Aberdeen First National Bank and Mrs. Florence M. Lane of Sheldon Iowa announce their engagement. The wedding is planned for Decorah Iowa at the bride’s parents home in early spring. Gannon is 58, widower, resident of Aberdeen for ten years.
Aberdeen South Dakota March 12 W O Amphlett clerk of courts for Marshall county was found dead in his bed of heart failure His wife was visiting friends in the twin cities when he failed to appear at his office Friends went to the house and found him dead He was a pioneer settler of South Dakota and formerly resided in Brown county.
Carrie Nation visits Yankton and Centerville delivering pointed lectures. In Yankton she targets college towns with saloon culture and mocks the Mason reunion, then at John Behm's saloon causes a disturbance. In Centerville she accuses the Republican Party of life ills and presents her divine calling to carry a nation’s burdens.
Geddes S D March 11 The Charles Mix county farmers institute will be held in Geddes on March 14 and 165 Superintendent A E Chamberlain assisted by some of the best talent in the state will be in charge Prizes to the value of several hundred dollars will be distributed among those who can show the best farm products H C Tucker editor of the Charles Mix County News again offers a high grade top buggy for the best 10 cars of corn raised by a News subscriber in Charles Mix county This will make the third buggy donated by the News amongst subscribers in the interest of good farming A large attendance for the institute is assured.
Frank Kohli, nephew of the victim, signed an affidavit charging Joseph Shanberger with a murder committed near Waterville 30 years ago. Shanberger is jailed in Sturgis South Dakota and being brought to Lucas County. The case emerged from anonymous letters received by the prosecutor.
Mrs Laura Williams of Clear Lake South Dakota settled for 8000 cash, halting her father in law J W Williams from appealing a 16000 verdict for alienation of affections. She withdraws a 4000 wage claim. divorce from her husband continues. The Williams family has long been a local gossip topic in Devel county.
In Aberdeen South Dakota on March 11 a husband found his wife Mrs Gilbert Masher, her mother in law and her year old son frozen to death in an abandoned sleigh eight miles from Mahto Their team had been freed to seek shelter as a blizzard raged over the Standing Rock reservation three weeks earlier The family had aimed to reach a neighbor for aid but never woke from the cold.
A large meeting in Huron, March 11, established a state organization for civil engineers and surveyors. Officers named include S. B. Howe of Sioux Falls as president, B. E. Lovejoy of Redfield as vice president, and D. C. Washburn of Aberdeen as secretary and treasurer. An executive committee includes E. K. Mather Mitchell and R. W. Townsend Fort Pierre.
Arthur Pease, who earlier in the winter was reported dead in a Sioux City hospital, appears alive in Humboldt. He explains he spent most of the season in an Iowa hospital not located in Sioux City, clarifying a mistaken death notice.
D Loftus of DeBmet and Nat S Tyler of Sioux Falls announce the South Dakota Retail Merchants and Hardware Dealers association will hold its annual convention in Yankton May 10 11 and 12. The shift from January February to May aims for higher attendance. plans include a strong program with leading merchants and speakers from western cities. Yankton officials pledge full support and hospitality for visiting merchants.
Yankton South Dakota March 11 The annual inter society debate for the Flanigan prize in memory of Will Flannigan was held in Fisk assembly room at the college. The question urged Congress to ban interstate transport of products from factories employing children under 14. The Thegnan society backed the affirmative while the Adelpbians opposed. R J Swanson won the Flannagan prize and will join the inaugural intercollege team with Brookings and Mitchell. Judges included L B French T E Price and Robert Tripp from Yankton.
Wakonda South Dakota March 11 The Wakonda Institute and Corn show on March 3 and 4 drew notable prizes for white corn butter yellow oats calico corn and multiple oats divisions. Winners included Eugene Hackett Frank Devine Ole L Bervin and others with good auction prices. The event was led by the Commercial club despite bad roads.
Belle Fourche South Dakota March 11 directors of the Water Users association protest government policy under the reclamation act. They oppose requiring landowners to live within 50 miles and oppose a fencing order along the canal right of way saying it endangers stock and makes daily gate checks impractical. They urge the department to withdraw the order.
South Dakota Governor Vessey urged developing water powers in navigable streams and backing the Carter bill to keep powers for the state. He cited a Wisconsin project and estimated Missouri river potential could yield over six million dollars annually, aiding state finances. He noted support from attendees and discussed currents and future generations.
Mrs Newson of Frankfort in Stanley county nursed to life by a feather bed after her claim burned in a cold night. She was found near the ruins, toes possibly frozen beyond saving and may need amputation.
Anton Everson, about 21, employed at Carl Look's meat market in Sioux Falls, lost his right hand when it was caught in a bone machine during processing. He had recently moved from Brookings and has lived in Stony Falls about a year.
Sioux Falls residents search for Martin McMahon's kin after his death from pneumonia. He left instructions to notify relatives but the nurse who heard them also died of pneumonia, leaving no contact details. Those knowing his family should contact Oscar Solie in Sioux Falls.
Tom Thackeray, town marshal and deputy sheriff of Hudson 8S. D., suffered a broken right ankle and dislocated joint when scaffolding collapsed while he built a garage for W. B. Coleman. He is a seasoned carpenter trained in England and will be laid up for some time. Clifford Cable and Miss Ethel Broillar will marry Sunday at 2 PM at the bride’s home. Cable works on the Pease ranch near Fort Collins after moving from Colorado for health reasons.
Lead South Dakota March 15. Homestake Mining says it is full handed and needs no more workers. About 800 Slavonian laborers remain in Lead with little income and housing at stake as several hundred already left town. Some seek work in California fruit belt. others consider relocation options.
Armour South Dakota March 15 M J ZImmer of Corsica held to May term for murder of Henry A Dilges of the same place. The crime occurred Tuesday night as Dilges allegedly planned to rob Zimmer. Zimmer, a saloon keeper, fired three shots wounding Dilges in the head and killing him instantly with a shot through the temple.
Immigrants are arriving daily in Huron Iowa and surrounding Bea dle county. The influx is earlier than last year with bids for lands and farms lower than prior years. Dozens move west of the Missouri and northward as new settlers take over about 2000 acres near Blairs town, Iowa, arranged by G. K. Kimm.
Aberdeen South Dakota March 15 After finishing testimony in United States v Charles Sherman a white man charged with selling Minor to Standing Rock Crowfeather was arrested by U S Marshal McVeigh in the federal building He is charged with criminal assault on Mrs Dog On The Butte January entry shows he forced entry to her tepee and ejected her son Crowfeather and the woman and her son were brought as witnesses in a liquor case Sherman was freed from custody.
