Last Thursday evening saw five social gatherings, each drawing substantial crowds and contributing to a lively sense of community. Hosts reported strong turnout and enjoyment as residents connected at venues across the city.
A busy Thursday evening of society events featured a W C T U reception with Mrs J B Wolgemuth hosting a high five party for Mrs George Lumley of Pierre and friends. Prizes awarded in card games. Mrs R F Dundass won the consolation. Mrs Nichols surprised her husband H G Nichols with a five course birthday dinner and a playful card seating plan.
A W C T U reception at Odd Fellows hall drew about 150 attendees led by Mrs. C E Hager. Rev D R Tomlin and Rev A C Stevens delivered toast interpretations including The New Woman and The New Man. Mrs Anna Simmons spoke on Our Voters and Mrs Stevens gave musical and dramatic performances while Miss Stair Miss Daniels and Miss Brown presented recitations and solos. Mr and Mrs Brown planned a Milwaukee freight run for their move from Mitchell to Chamberlain.
A large audience attended the St Patrick’s Day performance of Shamrock and Rose at the Grand Opera House. F P A McGovern as John Desmond and Edgar A. Dix as Capt Beck drew strong praise for their portrayal. The play, with musical interludes and specialty acts, benefited Holy Family church and drew a solid financial gain.
Mahanna and Johnson reached 578 feet in the city artesian well and sent rock samples to Brookings College chemist Prof. Shephard and Vermillion geologist Prof. Todd. Both report no granite or quartzite. the rock is coarse water quartz sand with silica cement and pyrite concretions. They anticipate easier drilling beyond the current sand layer.
Mrs Lillian M Dundass wife of Marvin F Dundass died in Roxbury Boston on Sunday March 12 after a brief illness of tubercular meningitis. The tragedy touched many in Mitchell where she spent last summer as friends and relatives gathered to remember her. Interment was at Woodlawn with services led by Rev D W Waldron and hymns Jesus Lover of My Soul and Nearer My God to Thee were sung.
