An Attempt at Murder in Mc Dearmaids Saloon
A brutal stabbing occurred Wednesday night at Mc Dearmaids saloon when Tom Lytle known as Reddy attacked William Patterson a blind Black man with a knife. Patterson was badly injured with a jaw wound and a near severed thumb while Lytle was arrested after the melee and held to May term in bonds of 1500 dollars. The incident sparked crowd attention and prompted calls for stricter local order.

Fire Department Elects New Officers In Annual Ballot
The Mitchell fire department held its annual election last Wednesday night with three candidates for chief. Henry Swisdler won on the third ballot over Gillis and Stair, becoming chief. Charles Ruh was named assistant chief, L F Stair secretary, Thomas Wellen treasurer, and James Rogan time keeper. A running team was proposed by H R Schnedler, J D Kress, C W Gillis, and H B Adams.

City Council Debates Land Filings and Saloons

At the United States land office two contest cases were heard Friday. Attorney A B Hager represents David Paxton against Gustav Gertz over a Yankton reservation homestead. A second case, R A Livingston vs Henry Heitritter, involves a Union township land that changed hands and was claimed as a homestead in January 1896. Livingston asserts the claimant never established residence and now resides in Boyden Iowa.
