Million Dollar Fire Hits Schumaker Mills in Cleveland

At 2 AM a massive fire engulfed Ferdi nand Schumaker’s oat meal mills in Cleveland, sweeping the dryhouse and elevator. The blaze damaged the Universalist church, freight house, Windsor hotel, and a railroad depot, with losses around one million dollars and 150000 bushels of wheat lost in the elevator. Firefighters from Cleveland Canton and Kent aided, saving parts of the south-west mill and a dwelling.

W. B. Howard editor of the Hunt County Chronicle shot W. Russell city marshal of Kingston. Russell Overholt and Kirk Haley were fatally wounded by a stray shot as Howard fled on horseback pursued by the sheriff. Howard, known for attacking saloon keepers, faced a mob before the shooting.
