At 2 AM a massive fire engulfed Ferdi nand Schumaker’s oat meal mills in Cleveland, sweeping the dryhouse and elevator. The blaze damaged the Universalist church, freight house, Windsor hotel, and a railroad depot, with losses around one million dollars and 150000 bushels of wheat lost in the elevator. Firefighters from Cleveland Canton and Kent aided, saving parts of the south-west mill and a dwelling.
Mary Bleeker widow of Ex-Governor Seymour dies at Mrs. Itasco Conkling’s residence in Utica after illness. Senator John A. Miller of California dies in Washington after a long illness from a head wound and complications. He leaves a wife and one daughter. Governor Stoneman has the power to appoint a successor.
The New York weekly bank statement reports a reserve drop of 2,864,000 dollars with banks holding 23,870,000 dollars above legal requirements. In Jacksonville Illinois a shooting match drew strong interest as Capt Logardus and J A Stice faced off for the American field cup and 250 dollars per side under English gun club rules.
The two-year cup holder challenge allowed quarterly shots. The first match in Peoria on March 2 saw Bogardus 81 Stice 76. The ensuing match in this city produced Bogardus 63 Stice 90.
W. B. Howard editor of the Hunt County Chronicle shot W. Russell city marshal of Kingston. Russell Overholt and Kirk Haley were fatally wounded by a stray shot as Howard fled on horseback pursued by the sheriff. Howard, known for attacking saloon keepers, faced a mob before the shooting.
Reports say a grain elevator in Easton and the Ninth ward school house in Peoria burned. Losses tally to 46 000 at the elevator and 15 000 at the school with 5 000 insured.
