Special to the Chicago Times reports George W. Makepeace a Dunlap lawyer was arrested at St. Joe after a chase from Dunlap and Denison. He allegedly married and deserted multiple women in Iowa and Dakota, with divorce and alimony facts cited, and fled with funds before ending in Hamburg and St. Joe. Local excitement follows the case.
In Shamokin Hill mill owner Lillie as a twin sister pair Katie and Susie, six years old, wandered into a revolving shaft upstairs. They were pulled into the machinery, thrown about for an hour, and fatally mangled. Susie survived with grave injuries.
