University basket social funds athletic association drive

The City Council delayed selling refunding bonds two weeks and sought new bids. A university chapel basket social raised over 50 for the athletic association, with prizes for best basket and unique designs. City Council Delays Bond Bid Opening and Approves Various Warrants

Abeyance of two weeks for new bond bids noted as council weighs a deal higher than a year ago. Several bills totaling numerous agencies and firms were approved, including police salaries, drayage, street and water works labor, fire department costs, and city plumbing. New Settlers Arrive in Davison County

Davison county welcomes several new settlers led by John Hulsebus of Buck Grove Iowa and the Messrs Peterson of DeWitt Iowa. They arrived Monday with cars of household goods and farming implements. Hulsebus recently purchased a farm northwest of town, the George Rogers farm, south of the poor farm, and plans to take possession. The Petersons intend to rent land and farm for a year before deciding on a purchase.

Aberdeen Industrial School Lands Picked by League on Deck

The League on Deck selects 40 000 acres for Aberdeen Industrial School. At a Monday meeting in the county court house about 30 people attended. Gov Ayers private secretary did not arrive until after the meeting ended. Everett Smith spoke and critiqued the Republican party and Pettigrew’s candidacy. John Colvin presided and introduced speakers. The league plans a Dakota University debate and hopes to form a permanent organization next week.

Land endowment lands selected for Aberdeen school

The legislature awarded 40,000 acres of public land for the Aberdeen industrial and normal school. Governor Lee Land Commissioner Eastman and State Auditor Reeves approved the selection at Yankton. Most land lies in Aberdeen district with McPherson county housing the most tracts. Rentals will fund the institution.

A committee in charge of the institution’s interests lauds the selections of unappropriated tracts made by Commissioner Eastman and Auditor Reeves. The governor approved the choices, marking satisfaction with the result as the bill became law.

Man Convicted In Robbery Of Own Safe In Marshall County

G B Lindley, a Marshall County business man, was accused of stealing $700 from his own office safe. A friend had placed the money there for safekeeping. Lindley’s first trial ended in a hung jury, but on the second trial he was convicted and sentenced by Judge Smith to two and a half years in the penitentiary after time was granted for new-trial arguments.

Dakota University Notes and Student Activities

Liko elected president of the Protonian Literary Society replacing Miss Eckert who resigned to join a new ladies society. The revival band enters its second week with members traveling to Canistota and Delmont reporting twenty five conversions. YWCA elected Miss Eckert president and Miss Noble vice president with Miss Williams as secretary and Miss Laurson as treasurer. Mattie and Ella Brink visited D U on Feb 24 and 25. The state Y M C A convention will be held at Yankton Marsh March 16 to 18 with DU sending a large delegation. Mrs. Duncan and C G Paulson temporarily lead Miss Quigg’s classes as the patient shows some improvement today.

A Suit for Wages Before Justice McKinley

Gus Van Hover sued Dan Lilly for pro rata wages claiming a year long contract at 250 dollars. Evidence presented, judgment awarded Van Hover 11.23 dollars, paid by Lilly before leaving the courtroom. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the decision.
