thrift and time as capital in modern economy
The article argues thrift shifts from material saving to saving time as mechanical progress lowers material costs. It notes examples from Edison’s cheap watch to twine use in the postal service and urges valuing intellectual, social, and family welfare over tiny fabric savings when time is the real scarce resource.
