Lawrence Rugles of Iowa reports a circular letter from the American Minister Collier in Madrid, warning of a long running swindle by Spanish grafters who solicit funds from U S citizens. The minister notes hundreds of similar letters and urges publicity to stop the fraud and spare others from loss.
In Pierre South Dakota June 17 a United States court awarded Charles E Furman of Rochester a judgment of 3000 dollars plus interest on bonds issued by St Lawrence township to fund an artesian well sinking under the Melville irrigation code. The township kept interest for years but three years ago halted principal payments and now resists repayment. As St Lawrence has faded from maps amid Miller growth many old securities remain to be paid by surviving residents.
All Saints school in Sioux Falls closed the year with commencement exercises and a medallion portrait unveiling of Bishop W. H. Hare. Alumni presented the portrait and tablet in the chapel. Bishop Tuttle and Bishop Hare spoke. Diplomas were awarded by Bishop Hare to Hannie Grigsby Mary Fuller Harriet Simpson Alice Davenport and Josephine Ware.
The Warner Lake and Armour Traction company held its first annual meeting revealing officers John Absher as President John Stedrens as Vice President P Wanzer as Secretary A Amundsen as Treasurer and A H Pease as Auditor. They plan to take over Wagner electric plant build a tower house at Armour and order machinery costing about 25900 dollars.
The Kaufmann murder trial in Flandreau South Dakota features the defense asserting Mrs Emma Kaufmann is not guilty. Moses Kaufmann testifies about relations with Agnes Poireis and the girl s death at a Sioux Falls hospital while doctors discuss diabetes and blood clots as possible death causes. The trial draws crowds as long sessions continue with intense cross examination and procedural delays.
The witness described Agnes Kaufmann as pale with dark circles and swollen eyes. He testified she said the sickness was an old country disease, refused hospital care, and insisted Chautmann's was her home, with Mrs. Kaufmann showing kindness. No money offered for testimony or wages were discussed.
The Nineteenth Annual Black Hills Soldiers and Sailors association reunion occurs in Hot Springs on June 25. Activities include enrollment at 1 a.m. at the State Soldiers' Home, a 2 p.m. call to order, 3 p.m. welcomes and addresses, 6 p.m. hard tack and coffee, 7:30 p.m. speeches and toasts, and a banquet at noon with Governor Crawford and naval veterans among honored guests.
Warsaw report says rains have devastated the lowlands around Nappanee ruining the onion fields. The fields are described as the largest in the world and the loss impacts local growers and markets.

Officers are President G H Percy Conde Vice President W S Raymond Twin Brooks Secretary Treasurer J W Minning Booze. The program lists addresses discussions and topics on breeding pastures fencing fattening wool and lamb care with speakers from Huron Brookings Wolsey White Sioux Manley Hartford and more.
The remains of three Sioux Falls residents have been brought home for burial. J. W. Jensen a former prominent lumber dealer and 1906 Republican sheriff candidate died in Chicago after moving there years ago. Harry Archer a former market operator died in Minneapolis after a two day illness. Frank Lamb son of Richard Lamb a long time local resident and barber, born and raised in Sioux Falls, died recently after moving to Burlington, Iowa.
Colonel Robert W. Stewart, long time counsel for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway, accepts a position as counsel for Standard Oil and will move to Chicago after settling affairs in Huron. His departure leaves regret in the community and with the company.
A. C. Johnson of the Chicago and Northwestern railway reports no green bugs in Beadle County wheat, saying the so called green bug is native aphid and not damaging. James Valley crops are in fine condition and weather looks favorable for advancement. Minnesota reports show good small grain growth but corn prospects are unclear due to moisture, with no evidence of a harmful green bug.
Secretary of War Taft arrived in Sturgis at 4 10 PM after stops at Hot Springs and Rapid City. He was greeted with a tomahawk and a hair bridle gift, spoke on Fort Meade’s regimental status, reviewed troops, and attended a reception at Colonel Rogers' home before departing at 7 45. Excursion trains brought crowds from Deadwood and Lead.
Aberdeen South Dakota June 19 three men died and one was critically injured when a boiler exploded on a steam plow outfit four miles west of Selby. Oscar Barber Wash Koehler Sam Baker were killed and W H Carle the owner was fatally injured. The boiler burst while being prepared for the afternoon work. Baker was blown 300 feet away and died instantly.
In a terriffic storm Saturday night the Siegel Catholic church twelve miles north of Yankton was blown to pieces. The building and contents were worth 7000 dollars. No other serious loss by the storm is reported.
Pierre South Dakota reports the drowning of 3-year-old William Schmidt when a gust of wind blew him into a stream near the city. Mason City Iowa records the drowning of a 3-year-old boy, son of Mr and Mrs Henry Crosby, in the Calamus creek while his elder brother swam nearby.
St Louis report shows Miss Rosa Resvis 23 suffers a peculiar rash after exposure to green wallpaper. City chemist Buckland confirms the coloring matter may worsen when she stays long in the parlor as doctors decide next steps for treatment.
Pierre S D June 18 Charles C King the Scotland bank wrecker pleaded guilty to twelve of the ninety five counts in the U S court last Saturday and was sentenced to five years in Leavenworth federal prison. He admitted false reports mis appropriation drawing drafts without authority and other charges while his attorneys said he acted to save the bank. He broke down in court and has required medical care since. He remains jailed awaiting the case of Yellow Boy the Indian charged with murder and may be moved to Leavenworth together if convicted.
Over 200 bankers gathered in Huron for the South Dakota Bankers association. H. K. Sheldon of Watertown was named president with J. B. Platt of Clark as secretary and Ed Ji Miller of Huron as treasurer. The next meeting will be in Deadwood next summer.
Sioux River rises again in Sioux Falls South Dakota on June 18 with water spreading west of the city. H T Carson an old resident says there is more water on the bottom than in the high water of 1881. Much crop damage reported as floods continue.
