Strong resolutions defend soldiers in G A R Brookings meeting

At the Brookings G A R session on June 1 the group adopted forceful resolutions in defense of the government and our armed forces. The document, received with a letter from Geo B Cortelyou, condemns slander against soldiers and praises the nation’s protection of life and property abroad.

Endorsing Army Actions and McKinley Tribute Declared

The resolutions affirm faith in government officers to correct violations at home or abroad and deny cruelty in army control. They praise army and navy movements in the Islands as wise and humane, and close with respect for President McKinley and a denunciation of foreign anarchist groups as unfit under the flag.

Young Man Killed In Bicycle Accident At Harrison

Omie Harris a 21 year old youth died from a concussion after a bicycle crash on the south side. He fell near the Harris grocery store while racing with friends, was treated by Dr. King, and died two hours later. Harris, from Douglas county, leaves three brothers who work at the adjacent grocery.

Tragedy in Mitchell Ailing Student Dies After Gym Accident

W K Harris rushed to Mitchell to collect his son’s body after a fatal fall from a trapeze at Yankton College. The young man, once a Yankton College student who later worked in a Mitchell grocery, had long suffered head pains since an earlier college gym accident. Funeral held near Harrison.

Census Shows City School Population Rising Sharp

Clerk Wallace reports 1005 students in Mitchell schools this year, excluding university attendees counted separately. An 100 increase from last year and a rule change by the attorney general kept university students out of the census. Estimated population roughly five times the school count, aiding apportionment of state school funds. Treasurer Davison has received about 2139.34 for the first half year, with potential total over 3000 if the pattern continues. Salary list reaches 1000 monthly with numerous running expenses and about 1300 in the treasury and no warrants outstanding.

Land sales in Davison county yield quick profits

Davison county land markets show rapid gains as buyers flip parcels in Perry township. J H Marks bought 400 acres at 26 per acre, Dempsey resold at 35, then at 40 within weeks. Marks also paid 23.50 for a 40 acre quarter nearby. Investors from Pipestone and St James pursue Beulah and Huarker Bros tracts, amid wheat-rich prairie.

Tramp Kills brakeman in Sioux City incident

A gang of tramps attacked Milwaukee Road brakeman Fred Powell at a small Sioux City station. Powell was stabbed below the breastbone and died within ten minutes after returning to the caboose. Tramps were arrested. a white man identified the killer to police. Powell was a known railroad man with a Sanborn mother. This marks a third recent assault on railroad workers linked to tramp encounters.

Loomis Sells Land, Plans Move to Minneapolis

L N Loomis sold fifty thousand dollars worth of lands in the past week and will retire from real estate. He and his family move to Minneapolis next week to devote full effort to grain business. J R Milliken of the Bank of Alpena will take over the land business and will represent several insurance companies he has served for fifteen years.
