Poultry Show Preview and Ingalls Lecture in Mitchell

A Mitchell gathering features the state exhibition of pure bred poultry on Feb 4 2 and 3. Ex Senator John J Ingalls spoke Friday on Problems of Our Second Century praising citizenry and urging limits on foreign laborers. Copeland slated for Feb 11 as next lecture in the series.

Land Office Bustle as Homestead Proofs Proceed

At the U. S. land office register Boynton reports a busy day with a 9 o'clock rush of settlers filing homesteads on Yankton reservation. Frank K. Lewis proved up on a reservation claim. 15 to 20 settlers have proved up and four received patents. Geo Lotze of Ohio applied to prove up on a quarter section via attorney John L Jolley Vermillion. final proof due March 1. Three contest cases also noted.

Timber culture cases adjourned in Lake and McCook counties

Hearing before the department consumed much of the day with three cases. Frank Muller vs heirs of Louis Altpeter (Milwaukee) involves a timber culture claim in Lake county. Emanuel Schoenfelder vs John Bauer contends land in Rome township. Thomas Jennings vs John P. Simon contests a timber claim in McCook county. Lawyers Hager Johnston Winsor Mobr Goodykoontz Helwig Adams attend. Two cases remain unfinished.

Davison County Poultry Show Promises Large Exhibition

The Davison county poultry show reports strong progress for a larger event this year with a February 1 to 3 schedule. Officers and committees are named, plus details on precautions, exhibitor handling, judged scoring by W S Russell, and an evening 1 cant admission for concerts.

Declamation Contest Awards Silver Medal At Court House

University students competed in a declamation contest for a silver medal held at the court house. J. I. Howe won the medal with a near perfect delivery as judges noted the close marks. The event featured readings by Josie Willomm Phoebe Brown Julia Rogers and performances by C W Downey Hazel Lathrop and others. The audience included university students and town residents and Rev Burleigh supervised.

Eastern Stars Entertain At Masonic Hall Initiation Banquet

Eastern Star lodge at Masonic hall initiated two new members Mrs A P Grimm of Parkston and Sidney W Smith of this city. Husbands of the ladies attended a banquet with 35 guests, followed by dancing and a recitation by Miss Harker. The event highlighted rapid growth of the lodge.

Declamation Subside Silver Medal Contest at Courthouse

A silver medal contest was held Monday evening at the courthouse under the Anti Saloon League with six University of Pennsylvania students delivering declamations in order: Solomon Nolt J I Howe Geo Wickersham R H Mc Curdy Wm Rowles Lauritz Miller Musical numbers followed by soloist Rev Burleigh and the University ladies quartet Mrs A OC Stevens and Miss Carpenter among participants.

State Fair Board Prepares for Yankton Exhibition

The state board of agriculture met at the Depot Hotel with President Brynes presiding. Officers elected for the year include John Armstrong as president Platt as treasurer Dean as secretary. Yankton designated for the 1898 fair with dates September 26 to 30. Edgerton guaranteed 5000 for Yankton. Miss Nellie McCallister of Chamberlain reported her sister Blanche drowned at Milbank while rescuing two schoolchildren. body sent to Madison for burial.
