The legislature will introduce bills to shield farmers from dishonest warehouse operators. Appropriations for deficiency bills are expected to be substantial if approved.
Pierre reports the South Dakota legislature shelved two proposed constitutional changes including initiative application and a two thirds vote requirement. Debates covered state jobs, education qualifications for county superintendents, and a contested penitentiary warden race with Governor Lee's backing. Also discussed were militia location, portraits purchases, wolf bounties, and warehouse fraud protections for farmers.
Special Correspondent reports in Pierre that senators push for township elected fire marshals, review bills to raise supreme and circuit court salaries, and consider limiting charities board. House bills fund creamery, dormitory, steam plant, chapel, and teaching reforms while a constitutional change would set an educational qualification for schools superintendent. The bill requires every elevator in the state to obtain a license and post a bond of two to fifty thousand dollars based on capacity. The House adopted a resolution thanking the South Dakota volunteer regiment for their prompt response to the nation’s call and promising lasting recognition.

The Sherwood Quartette performed at the opera house as the second show of the concert course, earning strong applause and several encores. Miss Osborn, Mr. Hannah, Miss Crawford, and Mr. Canmano received praise for their solos and blend, with Mrs. Merrill's piano impressing throughout. The group plans a return to Mitchell after a Chicago-bound trip.

Miss Nettie Sterling a 24 year old Dakota University student living south side died Sunday night from pleurisy and heart trouble after a week of illness. Pallbearers from the university carried her remains to Parkston for funeral services and the institution suspended morning work. Mrs Wm Lange aged about 35 died Monday morning after gripp and pneumonia developed during pregnancy. Funeral at the Catholic church followed by burial in Catholic cemetery.
After delays the Artesian Well near the water works was dynamited with a 50 pound charge. The explosion created two concussions and forced water to surge from the pipe. Drilling resumed with hope to pierce the rock while water flow from the old Gray Bros. well increased substantially. Meanwhile C. Larson died at his home 14 miles south of Mitchell at age 58 from brain congestion, with funeral at the Swedish church Sunday.
