A Miller South Dakota report states a hold up occurred as a man returning from town after selling a load of wheat was relieved of his cash. The piece notes Sheriff Abbott summoned five county commissioners to Pierre to show cause why they refused Morris Burk's bond to open a saloon in Miller.
Olaf Westerland, an agent for Cummings on the John H. King ranch near Lake Byron, was ambushed by two men with revolvers while returning from town with a load of wheat. They stripped his outer garments, found about 2 dollars, and ordered him to drive away. local authorities fear a gang is at large after a second holdup in a week, keeping settlers vigilant.
Newly elected officers of Kilpatrick post No 4 G A R and Kilpatrick Relief Corps No 2 were publicly installed. Dr T M Shanafelt and Mrs Permelia Goodell led ceremonies. speakers included Department Commander Thomas Reed and Captain W R Stow. A steel shaving from a 16 inch gun and a historic photo were presented to the post.

Allentown Pennsylvania January 12 District Attorney Warner abandons murder indictment against Mrs Catherine Bechtel mother of Mabel Bechtel killed last October. She and her children Martha John and Charles Bechtel face charges of being accessories after the fact. Alois Hochstein Mabel Bechtel s suitor will be tried last. David Weisenberg attentive to Mabel will be first to face the jury to establish witness competence. The DA says Weisenberg will be tried first and acquitted to qualify as a witness. Trial begins tomorrow.
Mrs A G Widfall died from fire injuries and Leroy Greenwald and Norman Corbin were identified in local mortuaries. Seven chorus men and eight chorus girls testified leading to a non suit against the Mr Bluebeard company. Ten theater workers were arraigned with cases continued to January 21.
Henderson Kentucky June 11 former Governor John Young Brown died here today at an advanced age. He was prominent as statesman, soldier and citizen.
Sioux City Stock Yards report shows hog prices for butcher and nearby at 4.50 to 1.70, light and mixed hogs 4.20 to 4.50, cattle fa t cows and heifers 2.00 to 3.50, stock cows and heifers 1.70 to 3.00, stockers and feeders 2.50 to 4.60, butcher steers 0.50 to 0.69, and yearlings and calves 2.20 to 3.40.
Chicago reports hog receipts 32 000 market steady to easy with heavy hogs at 4 80 to 5 0 and bids up to 4 85. Cattle receipts 6 000 and sheep 15 000 with overall steady to slow demand. South Omaha shows mixed results and cattle steady with native steers 3 35 to 5 25 and calves 3 00 to 4 25. hogs 4 00 to 4 70. Kansas City cattle and hog prices range from 1 00 to 4 75 with lambs around 4 0 to 4 1.

The steamer Clallam of the Seattle Victoria fleet sank between Smith Island and Dungeness in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Fifty two aboard drowned, all women and children perished. Salvage efforts and lifeboat launches failed to save most occupants as wreckage and bodies drifted ashore from Port Townsend to Clover Point.
S W H Grimes, a Clallam passenger, survives after being swept into the sea and rescued by the tug Holyoke. Eight more bodies are recovered aging the total to thirteen. Identified deceased include Miss Louise Harris of Spokane and Mrs Thomas Sullins of Seattle, among others found near Victoria and Beacon Hill.

Lieut Gen John Brown Gordon dies at his Florida winter home after a stomach and liver congestion following an indigestion attack. Born July 6 1832 in Georgia, he rose from lawyer to lieutenant general in the Confederate Army and served in the U S Senate and as Georgia governor before leading the United Confederate Veterans.
John M. Shockley confessed to killing Motorman Gleason and Conductor Brighton during a robbery attempt in their car on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City. He said self defense forced the shootings after a vigorous struggle, and he considered suicide afterward but lacked the nerve. He claimed substantial inherited property and said his parents live in St. Marys Missouri.
Chicago, Jan 12. A covert test found eight train crews ignored a burned out semaphore light at Maygair station on the Chicago and Northwestern line. Eight conductors, eight firemen, and eight engineers were placed on sixty days' paid vacation. Suburban trains stopped only briefly, a conductor forced a stop to release his train, while an official behind a store claimed the stunt was sufficient work.

G F Utterback 45 cashier of Sigourney Savings Bank shot himself in the head last night at his home barn. The bank faced a run and loan troubles. a receiver was appointed as the bank closed this morning. Directors say full repayment is expected. Utterback was alive with poor hopes for recovery.
A. A. Bolks, a prosperous farmer from Sioux City, Iowa, murdered his wife in a Los Angeles boarding house today by slashing her throat with a pocketknife and then killed himself in the same manner. The act occurred before their 4-year-old son. Bolks, believed temporarily deranged over religious matters, authored the grim deed.
