A massive blaze at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago killed hundreds and left many unidentified. The fire occurred during Mr Bluebeard, caused by a faulty curtain and gas blast after the asbestos curtain failed. Rescue efforts ferried casualties from the theater to morgues as officials battled panic and chaos.
Chicago reports detail how Will J. Davis and others aided victims as fire and gas filled the Iroquois Theatre. Officials dispute whether a calcium light caused the blast while coroner Traeger notes asbestos curtain and railing hindered exits. The new fireproof venue seated 1724 and opened November 23 with Mr Bluebeard.

A basement blaze at the Sioux Falls hospital prompted a full scare as nurses staff and city workers evacuated patients in a northeast gale. Fire started in the furnace smoke filled the building but no serious damage occurred and patients were moved to nearby houses with none harmed.
Fire at the Northern Normal and Industrial school's new dormitory in Aberdeen South Dakota caused about 5000 dollars in damage. The blaze started near the center of the first floor, burned into the basement and second story, and left the decoration and woodwork replacement as the main costly task. The building had just been completed and was to be turned over to the board of regents next Wednesday. The origin remains a deep mystery with no prior fire in the building. The incident occurred two years after a previous major fire destroyed the institution’s main building. Robert Kirk of Springfield bought the Park hotel and will take possession next week. Miss Dora Titus and Lieutenant Leon Richmond were married last night and departed on a wedding tour.
The twenty first annual meeting closed in Deadwood after a close bid by Deadwood to host next year’s gathering. Officers were elected across departments with O M Hill of Brookings as president and C B Cobb of Hot Springs as secretary. The Northern South Dakota Educational association formed with W W Johnson of Aberdeen as president and A S Hoy of Redfield as secretary.
In Watertown South Dakota on January 4 Mrs Walter Mapes hosted a five generation family reunion. The gathering included Mrs Nancy Richardson of Rochester Minnesota and three Watertown descendants: Mrs M F Wait granddaughter Mrs Jack McCormick and great grandson Lyle McCormick. The event brought together four wives four mothers three grandmothers two great granddaughters and one great great granddaughter.
A basement fire at the Elks club building on Ninth Street in Sioux Falls caused about 7000 in damage before 2 30 pm. The Taylor Furniture Co on the first floor and basement lost roughly 6500, with 500 more in smoke damage to Elk club furniture and tapestries. The blaze origin is unknown but the solid masonry helped limit spread to upper floors. insurance covers losses.
Mrs P F McClure of Pierre shipped fifty head of thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle to Beresford South Dakota to be sold at auction. Prices ranged from 60 to 200 dollars per head. It was the first time fifty head of thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle were offered at auction in the state. The sale boosts full blood cattle breeding in South Dakota. Mrs McClure is noted as the leading Shorthorn breeder in the state.
At Aberdeen the election of Professor R B McClenan of Huron College to the presidency of the South Dakota Educational Association was met with wide satisfaction. McClenan, 52, from a Scotch Irish background, has held multiple educational posts including Sioux Falls High School, Madison Superintendent, and since 1902 principal of the formal department at Huron College. He is the first sectarian college graduate chosen for the post and was elected by acclamation.
Aberdeen S D January 6 The South Dakota Educational association adopted resolutions backing rural school centralization uniform high school courses and continued anti constitutional term limits for county superintendents It praised wage gains for teachers supported athletic control to curb mis trends and commended State Superintendent Nash The convention enrolled 400 teachers in attendance.
A. W. Tucker, president, issues notice for the State Firemen’s Association annual meeting at the Rudolph hotel Canton January 29. Business includes deciding the site for this year’s tournament and bids from competing cities. Secretary E. C. Bent calls a January 13 meeting of the state examining board for pharmacist licensure examinations.
