The article reports the signing of a five year arbitration treaty between Great Britain and the United States. It outlines how all controversies will be referred to a court of arbitration with no surrender of national honor and dignity, and notes the king of Sweden and Norway as prospective arbitrator. President Cleveland sent the treaty to the Senate with his approval.

R G Dun and Co reports 1896 saw 15,286 commercial and banking failures with liabilities of 276.8 million. Banking failures averaged 156 thousand per case, and manufacturing and trading failures rose mainly in lumber, dry goods, woolens, clothing, shoes, groceries, and machinery. West expects renewed soundness after the purge.
A Western Pennsylvania mill workers joint stock company to build an 80 acre iron and steel plant at Port Angeles Puget Sound near Seattle with projected cost 1.3 to 2 million dollars. Spring construction follows half stock subscribed by about 1,200 holders in Braddock Duquesne Homestead McKeesport Turtle Creek Wilmerding Pittsburg and Allegheny.
