Depositors faced 60 day withdrawal notices as runs affected savings banks. Also reported: U.S. gold production for 1896 roughly 51500000 with a possible total near 51150000, and silver output about 25253500 fine ounces, down from 1895.
London officials deny that the Marquis of Salisbury disapproved of features of the proposed general arbitration treaty between the United States and Great Britain as reported from New York. Isaac Lucker is sentenced to 386 years for arson, far exceeding the maximum 40-year penalty.
The Minnesota Legislature convened for its biennial session at noon and organized by electing J. D. Jones of Todd as Speaker and naming clerks and officers including M. J. Dowling, W. Z. Stine, O. K. Washington December 31 two radical changes in pension office procedure. All claims for increase will go directly to the medical division without board of review. The board review step is removed for most cases and only two examiners will review each claim under Commissioner Murphy.
Langlade County clerk Henry F. Strauss, aged 72 known as Honest Henry, died by suicide after facing a deficit of 3770.08 dollars.
