Youth Builds Wireless Phone in Dakota Campus Neighborhood

Mitchellson shows two telephone systems one by Dakota Central Telephone known as the automate system and a wireless system by Howard van Benthuysen between 1120 East University avenue and 1025 South Sanborn street about a block apart. The new device works well and is in constant use allowing clear conversations similar to a standard line though quieter. Van Benthuysen, son of Prof. S. D. van Benthuysen of Dakota Wesleyan University, built most of the apparatus over two years and oversaw its installation. The initial two room test gave way to a block length, with neighbors enjoying the novelty. Attempts to reach Max Black at 600 West Third avenue failed to hear talk but whistles were audible. With adjustments, longer distance talk may become possible. Howard Van, once a student inventor of wireless telegraph, now pursues wireless telephony while studying science at the college academy.
