Gertrude Hayward a 22 year old Mitchell woman, known as Miss Wayward, drowned herself in the Sioux River near the Queen Bee mill after leaving Mitchell and Sioux Falls friends. Coroner and police recovered the body, while relatives and employers described her as a well regarded shopper and clerk at Hoon’s grocery.
WS Gardner of Mitchell, uncle of Miss Gertrude Hayward, arrived in Sioux Falls and said no inquest will be held. Coroner Miller noted an inquest would be unnecessary if a Mitchell observer returned a note from the deceased with its telephoned contents. Gardner cannot explain the tragedy. the family history places her in Mitchell, Sioux Falls, and Fairbanks, Iowa, with conflicting accounts of her last days.
