South Dakota rail officials tour divisions to ready cars for grain shipments. Farmers refuse to hold grain, aiming for quick sales to meet obligations and invest in more land amid a booming crop year. Railways pledge full capacity and elevators cleared to handle increased volumes.
Seventy eight new dwelling houses have been built in Watertown since January with many more under construction. Properties range in value from two thousand to twenty thousand dollars.
Bridgewater South Dakota September 5 70 acres combined wheat yields for William Peppmuller reach 546 bushels averaging 21 bushels per acre D O Pringle cites 25 bushels for wheat and 50 bushels for oats from nearby fields indicating strong harvest activity and farm comparison across local plots
Aberdeen South Dakota announces the city and high schools will open on Monday September 10 with the normal starting the following day. Officials expect a large enrollment increase at the normal and high school. The faculty remains largely unchanged and two new school buildings were added to ease overcrowding in two districts.
The Christian Science congregation in Watertown has voted to erect a $25,000 church in the city. Plans are not yet accepted but stone is expected as the primary material. Watertown has the largest Christian Science membership in the state and needs a larger edifice than its current home.
Clear Lake South Dakota September 5 Wim Ronald of this city celebrated his 48th birthday. His wife gave him a new daughter and two hours later his married daughter Mrs G A Neumann informed him of the arrival of a grandson. It was a memorable day for Mr Ronald.
Deadwood South Dakota September 5 Herbert Allen has served as deputy county clerk for six years and will depart for Washington to take a department post. Russell Warren, previously deputy county auditor, will succeed him.
About 250 head valued at not less than 10600 dollars are missing between the southern border of the state and the Canadian line. They belong to Fleury Wryttenbach of Sturgis. Inspections later recovered some cattle shipped from Moorcroft and Valentine, proving the brand. Severe winter storms may have caused separations.
Codington county reports for August include 20 births and 18 deaths, the highest monthly tally since records began, with 11 marriages. County Superintendent Barnard touts 15 teacher nomination certificates passed by the state board, and W A Duryea cites a 90 acre blue stem wheat yield of 2118 bushels averaging 231.5 bu/acre.
Fire consumed both elevators owned by A. A. Truax and the Reliance Elevator Co. in Dolton, seven miles southeast of Bridgewater, destroying 1200 bushels of wheat and 1800 of oats with losses over 7000 dollars. The Shanard Bros. elevator, the town’s last, was saved after several flare ups. The cause remained undetermined and insurance was partial.
The past week saw rainfall above normal, with four inch plus totals in Bon Homme Minnehaha Turner and Yankton. Sunshine was scarce. mean temperature slightly below normal. highs ranged 69 to 96 degrees, lows 42 to 46. soil remains moist and some areas too wet. Overall growth favored by the moist conditions.

Brown County Fair association offers 50 to any couple willing to marry in public during the fair in Aberdeen South Dakota on September 6. Open to couples from outside the state. If multiple applicants, selection by ballot. The fair runs the first week of October with attractions booked.
In Custer South Dakota the county court hears Rh B Candee of Glendive Montana seek permission to adopt his two children. The children had been legally adopted seven years earlier by Mr and Mrs Charles Reder after Candee's financial decline. The Randers consented to release custody after Candee's improved means, allowing his return to Glendive with his son and daughter.
Rapid progress on Milwaukee Pacific coast extension in this state. Graders completed about twenty four miles west of the Missouri river and expect to reach the state line before month’s end. A temporary crossing has been built to move rails and material and rail laying west of the river will start about the fifteenth. On this side steel is laid from Glenham to near the new bridge site at Duroe and the Roscoe to Glenham main line now has heavy rails. Large work forces are active along the line and centers push forward as labor permits. Material lies between Glenham and the river for fifteen miles of road.
In Macon Georgia on September 6 the Democratic state convention unanimously nominated Hoke Smith for governor and endorsed William Jennings Bryan for president. The delegates also pledged support for the party platform and its candidates.
Watertown city council approves a largely signed petition to rename most streets by numbers. Kemp Warner and Huron will lose their historic names. Oak and Maple in the business district stay. Dakota Avenue remains unchanged as the sole non numeric thoroughfare. The change aims to ease deliveries and navigation for residents and visitors.

In Aberdeen South Dakota labor shortages slow railroad work on M. and St. L. Milwaukee and Chamberlain Rapid City lines. Track laying has reached Wallace twenty miles from Watertown with plans to increase output to two and a half miles daily under a new piecework wage system.
In Clear Lake on North Main street a steel bridge collapsed under a threshing engine, tossing the outfit and engineer Chester Palmer into the crash. Palmer was seriously injured and confined to his post at the throttle during the fall. The new bridge had been erected a month earlier by the George L Meeker company, Evansville, Indiana, which must cover damages and replace the structure at no cost to the city per guarantee.
Charles I. Cook of the Centerville Chronicle has been hired as editor of the Huron Journal-World after a stock company of friends of Gov. Cox I. Crawford purchased the paper to serve as an administration organ. Directors sought an editor for a month with no prior offers accepted.
Watertown dispatch says Adjutant General Englesby seeks post office addresses of all First South Dakota veterans who served in the Philippines for a congress voted medal. A blank form is sent to company commanders to compile a complete Philippine veteran list by the time the War Department requests it. Pierre notes Oklahoma, preparing for statehood, seeks Dakota guidance on statutes and primary election law. Grace Pattison, former secretary to governors, now stenographer to Oklahoma attorney general.
J G Lathrop of Charles Mix county won the Republican nomination for state senator in the Eighth district on the first ballot at a Lake Andes convention session held yesterday after a prior deadlock.
Peter Abelson of Yankton (29) was struck by lightning while milking near F. W. Bangs in Mission Hill during a storm at 4 a m. The bolt demolished the Bangs house. Abelson died instantly, leaving a wife and four children. He was a blacksmith with Johnson & Abelson.
Chicago September 4 The Frye bigamy case against Professor Charles H Frye was postponed to September 10 He formerly headed the Jack County Normal school and disappeared thirty one years ago returning recently and paying his wife 5000 to stay silent Mrs Goddard Hurley South Dakota filed the charge saying Frye married under the name Goddard and was arrested after his return
Secretary Root was welcomed by Chilean Foreign Minister Huneus and American Minister Hicks on the cruiser Charleston at Lota. After a banquet in his honor, he departed by rail for Santiago at midnight.
London reports clarifying the rumor of the engagement of Hon. Henry Lindhurst Bruce to American actress Camille Clifford. Lord Aberdare telegraphs from Kinrossie that the announcement is untrue. Mr. Bruce stands by his prior statements and refuses to alter his stance.

Yellow Haired Oliver, a Sioux Indian and member of the Rosebud agency police, becomes the first Indian officer in the state to be arrested by county authorities for disturbing the peace after he and another intoxicated Indian shot up Gregory in the ceded Rosebud reservation.
Lena Ulrich aged 14 and Pearl Palmer aged 15 from Herrick South Dakota mysteriously left home on August 25 around 10 PM and have not been found. Fathers Daniel Ulrich and J R Palmer urge anyone with information to wire them in Herrick.
Willian Poor Bear of Rosedue agency won a divorce from Hannah Poor Bear on grounds of desertion. Judge Rice granted the divorce after testimony of the Indian witnesses Good Calf and William Grown, heard on the reservation via Referee W C Courtice.
John Collins, held on intoxication charges in Bridgewater, tried to break out of the city jail. After a preliminary hearing he was bound over to the circuit court in $200 bond.
Miller, S. D. Sept. 3. Two farmers Riley and Willard Shaw were struck while crossing the track in a wagon by an evening westbound passenger train. Willard Shaw is expected to die, and the other likely will too. Two cases of beer, one partly consumed, reveal how it happened. The man not expected to live has a wife and a large family.
Vermillion South Dakota September 3 President I W Goodner of the board of regents met with Secretary Sloan to discuss university plans and the addition to the dormitory. No announcement yet on appointing a new president to succeed Garrett Croppers. Opening is about three weeks away with regents expected to act on the head of the institution.
The Western Portland Cement company of Yankton South Dakota will mount a large exhibit at the upcoming state fair in Huron featuring mammoth signs bearing the trademark and a cement display. Walter C. Grebe midshipman U S N is visiting Yankton on a thirty day furlough and recently passed Annapolis entrance exams with strong results.
A Cadet band led parade of mayor and ex mayors through Watertown to inaugurate Oak street across the union railroad yards. Officials praised efforts to connect north and south Watertown by a straight four mile wide road. Speakers recalled delays and set a 1915 population goal of 25 000.
A cyclone moved directly over Aberdeen South Dakota at 7 am with a loud roar and shaking buildings. The air rose as the storm spread east northeast across the horizon. Within an hour the sky cleared and no damage reports within 100 miles have been received.
