Two men, Thomas Sayre and Walter Cogswell, killed when an Illinois Central train struck their buggy at a hedge obscured crossing near Hulll three miles west. The wind and slope toward the track blocked sight and sound. one horse died, the other injured, buggy reduced to kindling. Witnesses: engineer and fireman.
Sioux Falls Aug 25 A new band filed in the U S court in this state by August Liebrecht former LeBeau Walworth county postmaster who is charged with embezzling government funds and released from custody He furnished a new bond of 600 after bondsmen withdrew The case alleges he appropriated 872 38 from the government on April 14 from the money order and postal accounts funds The federal grand jury convenes in Deadwood in September.
The Disciples of Christ church in Highmore was dedicated Sunday under the guidance of Walter J Carpenter of Wabash Ind. Morning service raised over 1000 dollars to finish debt on construction. The modern building features fine finish and its own gasoline lighting plant, with total cost about 2200 dollars.
Armour South Dakota August 25 The county crop returns are not as encouraging as early indications. Wheat was damaged by late heat and rust lowering yields from 20 to 14 2 bushels per acre. Oats are excellent with 1 to 5 bushels per acre. Barley equals last year. Threshing is active and markets are steady. Wheat price hovers near a cent. corn promising if frost stays away two weeks. Rain has aided corn and it is filling well after July drought.
In Sioux Falls Aug 95 Judge Carland of the U S court in this city modified Judge David Moore of Pierre for the position of United States commissioner based at Pierre. The term of James McCord, former commissioner for Pierre, expired months ago. The appointment aims to fill the vacancy created by McCord’s retirement as that post’s senior position.
Lateni S D Aug 2. A Mie Reid of Lime this state warns men who hoard wheat straw for cattle. He recalls the black rust plague in Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa about fourteen years ago when many cattle died from eating straw. The cause was identified after investigation by a government experimental station.
The county normal institute is now in progress with many attendees from distant points. Faculty includes G. M. Smith of Vermillion university as conductor, assisted by F. A. Poots of Delmont and Miss Mary Windle of Mitchell. The institute aims to greatly aid teachers and prove a pronounced success.
Deadwood South Dakota hosts a business men's carnival opening as the World Fair Carnival company arrives with attractions. The event, touted as the largest of its kind in the Black Hills, is underway on four streets amid favorable weather.
Yankton South Dakota August 24 Frank Schmelzle of Hanson was struck by lightning while caring for his horses at his farm and was killed instantly. The same bolt killed the team. He was married with a small family and well regarded. His father is Albert Schmelzle of this city.
In Sioux Falls reports, the will of Mrs. Abbie R. Dodge valued at $250000 is being challenged as she was allegedly mentally incapable and executor Rev A M MacDonald used undue influence. Relatives seek to set aside the will and distribute the estate to rightful heirs.
James Murray a young harvest hand died from blood poisoning in August after a pebble bruised his foot. He walked from Canova to Howard for medical care, lacked funds for rail fare, and died with no known relatives or home. He had drifted to South Dakota about a month earlier with other harvest workers.
Aberdeen S D Aug 23 Stockholders of Bath based Farmers Elevator report lingering dissatisfaction after three years of business. First year 67000 bushels 34000 dollars value. second year 60000 bushels profit claimed. last year 130000 bushels 81000 dollars. Varying accounts show a net shortfall over 5600 dollars and plans to wind up the company quietly. Also reports a severe Yankton storm with downed trees and church window damage.
Snagboat captain Gould, long in Missouri service, argues most snags are ancient buried logs resurfaced by sandbar erosion. He says river cutting frees roots and dries logs, making submerged logs dangerous. He crews to break or lift snags, clearing the river as green logs are rarely seen.
Sioux Falls report urges all bonded warehouses in South Dakota to publish in September a table of storage rates for the coming year. Rates cannot rise and must be printed on receipts. Licenses expired August 1 and many warehouses have not yet renewed with the railroad commission. Bonds of 3000 dollars per ten thousand bushels must be posted for compensated storage.
Vermillion August 24 fire at Marek's meat market caused interior damage and spread smoke to Attorney Payne's library, with minimal loss since water did not reach books. Plain Talk office nearby took water from the ceiling leakage.
Advice emphasizes keeping a barrel of lime, sprinkling coops and roosting places, using lime as a cleanser and disinfectant, spreading clean earth on the floor, and frequent white washing to prevent disease.
A heavy wind and rain storm swept northern Kingsbury County causing extensive damage to farm property including barns cattle sheds unharvested grain and roof damage. One horse was killed and Jens Nelson’s barn and sheds were destroyed. Large hail shattered windows and harmed crops. James Long, injured at the Central Dakota Flouring Mill plant, is recovering at a hotel.
Practically all strikers in the stock yards joined picket lines under organized plans. Police were increased in the packing district. Union business agent Thomas Stroker was arrested for blocking nonunion entrants. An estimated 1,000 strike breakers who quit Saturday did not return to work. Few new hires reported.
Chicago Aug 2 A riot at the stock yards Saturday night left one man dead and eight others wounded by bullets. The dead man was Andrey Nebroutski shot in the forehead. Wounded include Harry Hanson Dennis Ryan Daniel O Mara Richard Tarrell Albert Johnson Peter Tielles John Ke Winsell and Michael Boni. Police from distant stations responded as bricks and stones flew during the violent outbreak tied to a strike at Fortieth street and Emerald avenue with crowds of Negroes and Italians involved aboard packed trains.
International union head Michael Donnelly told West St. Louis workers that union support was lacking and urged strikers to avoid violence while pressing for union recognition. He planned to fix the strikers commissary operation and called for a citywide sympathy strike nationwide.
Chicago police report Captain Clancy says union No. 213 voted to adopt slugging for the stock yards strike. James Devines organized 600 members into squads to drag non union workers from street cars and assault them. Alexander Brezosky, a non union man, was dragged from an Ashland Avenue car and severely beaten.
A Cambridge group aboard the catboat Viscen capsized after a hat blew overboard. Karl Lindquist 43 and Mary Anderson 18, stepdaughter of Lindquist, and Ralph Jacobson 15 drowned. Harriet Anderson of Cambridge and Karl Umbert of Quincy were rescued by the Gloucester fishing schooner William H. Cross but only two of the party survived.
Salt Lake Utah August 22 Socialists have nominated a full state ticket headed by Joseph A Kaufmann for governor.
A cyclone struck Bryant on a Saturday night with hail and rain. The south half of the town lay in ruins with one dead and many injured. Several residents suffered severe injuries from falling timbers and crushed bodies. Willow Lakes nearby was nearly wiped out and all crops in the storm track were ruined.

Elevators schoolhouse and church demolished, most business houses damaged and three fourths of residences and barns affected. Ed Hoods residence struck by lightning and burned.

Hot Springs South Dakota hosts a two day shooting tournament organized by the Inter-State association. A strong turnout of sportsmen is expected and the Hot Springs Gun Club has raised a $200 purse to be distributed pro rata across all events.
Early today in Hot Springs Sevent h street bridge collapsed into Fall River. F B Smith a liveryman and six of his horses were on the span and went down with it. Despite a twenty foot fall Smith escaped with no injuries. none of the horses were hurt.
Chicago Rock Island and Pacific train No 1 derailed near the Rusher plant west of Princeton twenty four miles north of Trenton Illinois injuring forty five passengers with two in danger. Many travelers from Iowa Missouri and Illinois listed with cuts head sprains and contusions as mail baggage and smoking cars left tracks and one coach toppled after an engine derailment.
On the Vaderland arriving in New York from Antwerp Mrs. Florence Maybrick recently released from an English prison traveled under the name Mrs. Rose Ingraham. She appeared frequently on deck and in saloons but refused interviews, remaining largely unrecognized by most passengers.
Dynamite exploded at the head of St Marys reservoir near St Marys Ohio. The blast damaged the bulk head, broke windows, wrecked a house and a stateboat while causing a flood scare. Bloodhounds search for the dynamiters as Celina felt the shock ten miles away. Despite the blast the bank held, averting a catastrophe for surrounding farms.
