A. H. Pehrson receives a letter from his brother JOHN PEHRSON stationed in Cavite as a member of the First California volunteers. The letter, dated July 9 1898 from Cavite, notes sailing from San Francisco May 25 landing July 2 with fever water and poor sleeping quarters, and eagerness to begin fighting.
J. D. Farrell, secretary of the Interstate Land Co., moved his household goods from Chamberlain to Mitchell and rented east Flint street residence. He has secured the Chalkstone building next to the Grand Opera house for an office and plans improvements. His land lists cover surrounding counties.
The annual convention of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union will be held in Mitchell soon with attendees expected from local chapters and neighboring communities. The event will feature speeches, reports, and organizational sessions aimed at promoting temperance and social reform.
The Junior Epworth League held a Saturday ceremony at the Methodist church to raise the American flag. A large crowd gathered as the G A R post arrived in procession. Judge Powers Geo A Silby and Rev A C Stevens spoke in patriotic remarks. The Maltese cross flag badge was affixed and the national hymn sung. Mrs C E Vermilyea led the effort ensuring a prominent flag display.
A new Central Dakota Telephone company forms to build a line from Brookings to Pierre with branches to key towns. The system will bridge Dakota Central lines in the north and Western Electric in the south, linking Aberdeen with Sioux City Yankton Sioux Falls Mitchell Pierre Brookings Huron Watertown and other major towns in South Dakota Iowa and Minnesota. Work will proceed rapidly to complete the network.
The note urges increased union membership with state dues of thirty cents per member. It outlines representation for unions and requests banners and Hag for districts and locals. It promises national speakers, including Mrs. Cramner, to boost convention interest.

At the land office, eastern seekers tour the Yankton reservation while two men from Armour and Harrisburg file on quarter sections. C J Ribble and C G Howland recently made final proof on homesteads paying 520 dollars each, amid talk of a favorable bargain. A contest over a quarter section saw Jos Gaisbaur and Chas L Perry clash after squatting and formal filing.
A group of twenty young ladies and gentlemen organized a Thursday bicycle party. They rode to the river, dined at Hoon's restaurant, rode again, and ended at Miss Doty Weller's home on West Fourth Street for hours of games and dancing. The event concluded with high spirits and plans to continue similar outings this season.
