An August 16, 1808 list details large discounts across gloves, embroidery, lace, shirts, gingham, underwear, hosiery, shoes, hats, overalls, collars, household goods, coffee, soap, dried fruit, starch, canned goods, and tobacco. Notable deals include 600 pairs kid gloves at deep cuts, 1,200 yards gingham and calico at 5c per yard, and 100 collars at 5c.
Three day session of the State Pharmaceutical Association in Mitchell drew good attendance and benefits for local druggists. A reception at Masonic Hall featured a ladies quartet, speeches by Dr. R. F. Dundass and F. M. Hammer, and indoor contests followed by hours of dancing with Nichole’s mandolin club providing music.
In Mitchell the thirteenth annual meeting of the South Dakota Pharmaceutical Association opened in the courthouse with President C. H. Lohr of Estelline presiding and E. C. Bent of Dell Rapids serving as secretary. About 40 counties were represented as the group discussed tax policy, competitive pricing, prohibition impacts on drugstores, and other industry issues. The afternoon featured committee reports and prize papers, with attendance listed including C. H. Lohr and E. C. Bent among others, continued on fifth page.
Saturday evening the city council held a special meeting to approve putting down another artesian well at 560 feet for 2.68 per foot. Alderman Bracy opposed the expense citing debt and water needs, while the majority supported Mahanna's offer pending a satisfactory contract. The license ordinance for billiard tables received first reading.
A Davison County correspondent reports on Republican contenders for local and state offices. J W Ottman of Ethan is favored for state senate. George Thomas seeks a return to the lower house. Henry Swindler appears strongest for sheriff though a dark horse may emerge. Other bids include George A Johnston for county treasurer, Geo B Kelsey for the same post, and auditors Palmer Champlin and Henry Anderson. W B Tobey of Rome township is likely to win the register of deeds nomination.
In a narrow margin future races form around F D Powers for county judge and Timon Spangler for county attorney. J L Hannett is named for the same post, with time to reveal more. Possible superintendent candidates include Bessie Thompson Carlotta Moy er and Miss Clara Wedehase. J H Scriven of this city plans to run for state auditor at the state convention, known across the state as a loyal republican who will make opponents think they are in a race.
Monday afternoon the kid baseball club played the tramps at their headquarters and lost 21 to 15. The tramps won and earned supper, while the kids left discouraged after two to three weeks of wins against the same opponents. A tramp complained to the editor about the arrangement, but received only sympathy for the hungry players.
South Dakota G A R members prepare to travel to the national encampment in Cincinnati this September. J B Wolgemuth says many will depart on September 3 with one cent per mile round trip fare Chicago to Cincinnati and side trips to Chattanooga and battlefield sites. Also notes visitors to Camp with Col Grigsby’s Rough Riders. Franz and Ralph Warner toured from Alexandria to Mt Vernon and Kimball to review real estate holdings.
