Extreno Oklahoma August 15. J M Beacom president of the Farmers and Merchants bank of Watonga committed suicide by shooting his own life. The president’s son W C Beacom is missing and believed to have fled after being linked to the bank’s affairs.
Martin Bredson, a farmer three miles east of Willmar, Minnesota, was kicked and dragged to death by a horse after tying the halter to his arm. The horse shied, dragged him over fields and through two barbed wire fences. He died before medical help arrived.
E J Holden former Citizens' alliance president argues the Populist party lacks organization and a sound creed. He rails against the Omaha platform claiming it would worsen state affairs. He says non partisan Farmers' Alliance betrayed at Cincinnati and urges independent voters to hold balance of power to elect reform minded officials. Shirk widow of E J Shirk a wealthy Indiana banker dies at 68 in Peru Indiana from a mix of diseases leaving an estate estimated between four and six million dollars in bank stock and Chicago realty. Seven United Salt Company buildings burn in Cleveland destroying seven large wooden structures with a loss of about 150000 dollars and 120000 dollars insured. The Works will be rebuilt within 30 days.
In Vicksburg, Michigan, L. W. Brainard fatally shot his wife and then killed himself. Mrs. Brainard had recently begun divorce proceedings, cited as the alleged motive for the tragedy.
In Culiaco on August 15 representatives from Armour Swift and Morris meet with National Butchers' association president Taylor to seek a settlement of the ongoing strike.
