George Beebe of Charles Mix county recounts a fishing trip on the Missouri river during which he and a companion caught 147 Missouri catfish in a bayou. They swore their only tool was an old hammer, used to drive fish into the boat as they crowded the shallow inlet.
Babcock of this city, a beloved pastor in South Dakota, marked his eighty first birthday on Sunday. Born August 11, 1826 in Ballston Spa New York he was ordained deacon in 1883 and priest thereafter. He has held church and state offices for years and led St. church at Mitewell for eleven years. He holds chaplain roles in multiple Masonic bodies and is an Elks honorary life member.
At the annual meeting of the Hartford Creamery stakeholders $20,012.46 was distributed for milk and cream. W. B. Watt Henry Schhaper G. A. Boulette Joseph Kwartz and W. L. Meyer were elected directors for the ensuing year.
In Paulkton South Dakota on August 15 a horse owned by John Small was rescued after about two weeks trapped in an abandoned well or cistern. The horse, though deprived of food, stood on its feet upon recovery, ending fears of horse rustlers at work in the area.
Superintendent A T Chamberlain filed his annual report to the farmers institute board showing 13 days of regular institutes, 280 sessions, and about 60,000 attendees in the year ending June 30 1907. Holden held three county funded conceites, total expenses listed, and plans announce series of institutes in Black Hills starting September 17 with further meetings west of the Missouri river. He aims to exhibit corn at the National Corn exposition in Chicago October 5-19 with 585 dollars set for South Dakota premiums and 10 000 open to competition from other states.

Peter Heyn son of Mr and Mrs Emil Heyn of Watertown South Dakota was killed in Jamestown a few days ago during a robbery by two soldiers. He worked for a street car company and was attacked on pay day. he died from injuries. A letter on his person identified him as the victim, sent by his brother George Heyn of Goodwin South Dakota.
William Chase of Deadwood, South Dakota, who had been stone deaf for seventeen years, was struck by a lightning bolt while sheltering under a tree during a storm. He reports hearing the crash and later hears faint whispers twenty feet away. Doctors say his hearing is fully restored and permanent.
Alderman John Croghan lies dying in St Joseph's hospital from a concussion after a Nassau street confrontation with a colored man named Ramsey. Croghan ordered Ramsey to stop when foul language was used and Ramsey struck him with a blow behind the ear. Ramsey fled but was captured while leaving town and will await word on the alderman’s condition.

Professor G. H. Wilkinson, an eastern educator of prominence, has arrived with his family to assume duties as the new principal of the Sioux Falls high school. He fills the vacancy created by Professor A. A. McDonald’s promotion to city schools superintendent.
Mrs Maury Scott Hartje and her two children, Mary Louise and Scotty, flee the Ligonier Springs hotel under detective pressure and take refuge with a private family. Augustus Hartje, noted Pittsburgh paper manufacturer, plans a possible new divorce suit pending the superior court ruling on his current appeal. The aunt, Mrs Vandergrift, accompanies them for support. The family plans to stay in the Vance cottage while court actions unfold.
In Hot Springs on August 18 little Armour Fleming aged five died after a burro mishap at a birthday party. He fell from a saddle and became entangled in the stirrup. Rescued after 200 yards, he died following a night of suffering from a fractured skull and severe head injuries.
Hot Springs South Dakota August 13 The fifty third convention of the International Typographical Union opens with welcome addresses by the mayor and local officers. President James M Lynch replies and delegates exceed fifteen hundred. The president's report emphasizes a pension plan for aged and disabled members and Brarmywoods report shows year ended May 31 1907 receipts of 1929304 91 and a treasury balance of 296862 97.
The wheat crop in North Dakota and much of South Dakota suffers from a hot wind spell with temperatures of 90 to 100 degrees. Analysts now project only a quarter to half of an average yield as heads brown and berries dry. Some winter wheat nearby avoids damage while corn matures slowly. farmers count on barley oats rye flax and livestock to offset losses.
Sioux Falls observes a clash as R. Vogel fights a city ban on free lunches with liquor sales. The council revoked Vogel's license for offering five cent sandwiches after an anti free lunch ordinance passed. Vogel seeks court review before Judge J. W. Jones with a hearing set.

A severe hail storm southwest of Minot North Dakota damaged Ward county grain along a twelve mile by one and a half mile path near the Mouse river. Officials estimate total losses around one hundred thousand dollars.
After trailing George Dotson alias Hooker Bil ex gambler and horse thief through Nebraska South Dakota and Wyoming he was captured at Worland Wyoming and is now on the way home with Sheriffs William Moses and Harry Trathen. They will receive 1000 reward offered by stock growers.
The annual Presentation sisters retreat in Aberdeen South Dakota ended with eleven young women taking the veil. Monsignor Mensing of Webster and Fathers Dermody Robinson of Jefferson and Feldheimer of Columbia led the ceremonies.
Freeman South Dakota reports Mr and Mrs Hofer of the Rockport Russian Mennonite colony near Freeman have a twentieth child. The couple, part of a large family, live in a colony known for its sizable brood. The father is 48 and the mother 47 with sixteen of the twenty children still living.
Rudolph Hader, a timekeeper for an extra railroad gang, is missing from Mina after cashing seven checks totaling 164 dollars in Ipswich. He departed Aberdeen and was last seen in Ipswich where the checks were cashed.
In Clear Lake during a heavy electrical storm lightning struck the livery barn of Stevenson and Hanson, burning the building and destroying nineteen horses along with buggies and harness. Loss to stock totaled about 10000 dollars with only 500 dollars insurance on the structure.
Deadwood, Aug. 12. S. R. McKinney secured a contract to concentrate dumps and slag at the old smelter. He installed jig tables and a Willey machine, shipped concentrates to Omaha, and has already cleared over 40000 with more to come. He travels the West choosing long-idle smelters for profitable operations.
Governor Crawford appoints Hon. H. P. Packard of Redfield and Hon. James Halley of Rapid City as delegates at large from South Dakota to the deep waterway convention in Memphis Tennessee October 3 6 President Roosevelt will attend and speak October 4 or 5.
In Deadwood and Lead, a strike by Lead-Deadwood Gas workers seeks an eight hour day after twelve hour shifts. The company has refused to concede, leaving areas in partial darkness for several evenings as talks stall and production slows.

Yankton announces the C. J. Van Doren company formed with C. J. Van Doren W. E. Burke and C. B. McVage as incorporators and directors. Capital stock is $10,000 and the firm will focus on inventions and the promotion purchase and sale.
Volga South Dakota August 12 The Dakota Central railroad struggles to obtain right of way as graders work eight miles southwest of Volga. Local landowners have armed themselves and barred access to their land until damages are settled with the railroad company.
Dayton August 12 F W Medler of Spencer Iowa was elected president of the Photographers association of America yesterday.
In Belle Fourche South Dakota on August 12 a rancher, guided by shepherd dogs, found the body of sheep herder Cooper shot through the head near Sheep Creek. Coroner Chantney departs for Sheep Creek to investigate the homicide.
Edward Mulvaney, a young man, killed his prospective father in law Robert Sealander during a quarrel over Miss Sealander. Mulvaney had intervened to prevent further harm citing his role as peacemaker but was struck down as Sealander attacked.
Washington reports automobiles and parts valued at over ten million dollars moved through U S ports in the last fiscal year with exports at five and a half million. France Germany and the United Kingdom supplied most imports while the United States ranks second among exporters after France with growing automobile trade internationally.
Paris reports Baron Henry De Rothschild funds a plan to reduce rent as family size grows. A model living complex offers two to three bedrooms and veranda with rent from $75 to $110 yearly for families with four or more children. Six hundred people already reside in these homes praised for air and comfort.
Sioux City Stock Yards report for August 14 lists hog prices for good light and butcher at 5.85 to 6.00, mixed and heavy 5.60 to 5.80, cattle prices include butcher steers 5.00 to 7.25, fat cows and heifers 4.00 to 5.50, grass cows 2.50 to 9.59, stockers and feeders 3.75 to 15.00, yearlings and calves 3.00 to 4.25, stock cows and heifers 2.25 to 3.25.
Market notes show butter 16 to 26 cents depending on grade, eggs at 12 to 14 cents per dozen, poultry with fat hens at 13 cents and roosters 5 cents, No 1 northern wheat 9 cents, corn shelled 42 cents, oats 38 cents, oil cake prices per ton vary by lot size. Live figures from Chicago indicate steady to slightly lower prices for cattle, beef cows and stockers. sheep show weakness with lambs values unclear.
Hogs market steady with heavy weights offered at 3.70 to 9.05 per hundred weight and light to mixed at 5.20 to 6.10. Cattle market shows steers at about 6.00 to 6.75, cows 1.75 to 5.99, feeders listed with varying quotes, sheep market described as week-long.
