Mitchell to Hold Corn Palace in 1900 Big Event

Mitchell business leaders form executive committee to organize a corn palace for September 26 to October 4 1900. The plan follows the 1892 93 success with strong support from local merchants and railroads Milwaukee and Omaha lines pledged aid including potential extra excursion trains to draw crowds.

Opening of the Corn Palace Work Discussed by Committee

The executive committee appointed a soliciting group led by D. A. Mizner A. B. Hager and D. W. Burright to raise funds for the Corn Palace opening set for September 26 to October 4. Local bicycle holdup ends with citizen arrest

John Gregory resisted a street holdup by a stranger who demanded his bicycle. G. C. Bras and Dr. Dix pursued and disarmed the assailant, later identified as Bob White. White was bound over to the circuit court on a bicycle theft charge with a revolver, held on $500 bond until the November term.

Sunday Morning Blaze Destroys Kelso Barn on Sanborn Street

A fire Sunday gutted Elder Kelso’s barn on Sanborn Street. Kelso’s gray horse was trapped inside and died. The buggy burned as the fire brigade struggled to haul hoses without drag teams. Spectators crowded the scene, hampering firefighters and drawing police cautions against crowd control, while a drag driver named Christian Booth fainted from heat.
