Mitchell people in attendance at Big Stone Chautauqua nearly all returned home Tuesday morning after a difficult drama presented in a manner that reflects credit on the actors and organizers.
Home players led by Miss Emison and Arthur W. Smith staged Pearl of Savoy at Holy Family church for the Holy Family fundraiser. Miss MacKay and Miss Willkemm drew praise in new and established roles while Miss Emison and Arthur W. Smith delivered strong musical numbers and four handed selections. Despite a smaller audience, the performance drew high appreciation for cast and music, with the storm preventing many from attending.
Rev GC E Hager oversaw the assembly with Mrs R B Hager assisting in W C T U work. He aims for the best outcomes for the Chautauqua. The Ladies Quartet will perform in Aberdeen Saturday evening and then head to the Epworth League assembly in Huron next week.
Milwaukee police officers conduct their annual crop inspection by traveling the state roads. The routine check emphasizes diligence in agricultural oversight and traffic safety compliance.
The board approved extending Mitchell's high school from three to four years aligning with state trends. New studies include chemistry, trigonometry, Latin, and expanded math and history. Electives in German French and Greek offered. teaching needs grow, seats updated, and an intermediate certificate planned for early graduates. Concerns voiced about student discipline and superintendent effectiveness.
August forecast predicts unsettled conditions with storms from the 1st to 3rd and a cooling trend after the 4th. The period from the 11th to 15th brings a hot wave and storms. rain appears scarce overall, with tropical activity possible along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Jos. Mrs. Stevens earned praise as a soloist and was encored. the event drew a strong Mitchell turnout and featured performances by the University Ladies Quartet and the State Juvenile Band.
A party of Milwaukee road officials led by Supt Cosgrave and General Manager Collins toured through Mitchell Chamberlain Marion Junction and Armour branches to inspect crop conditions. The trip included private cars and special trains with W K Underwood Scott Moll Goodnow and Beardsley among those meeting and departing from Mitchell.
Two former reform school employees say Supt Tompkins cannot manage the Plankinton institution. Anna Oestrick and Kate Kennedy quit after reporting ill governance and Kennedy briefly returned only to leave again citing ongoing misrule.
Assessment records indicate a rise in taxable property in Davison County with more land and livestock assessed. Land acres rose from 250,821 to 254,019 and valuation from 1,101,930 to 1,118,701. cattle increased to 13,494 head valued at 99,919. sheep total 3,745 valued at 5,613. Total county valuation stands at 2,064,651, down slightly from 2,066,457 in 1898 due to city structure reductions.
