Prairie Fire Kills Two Men Near Tobin and Lisbon
A devastating prairie fire started in Tobin township and swept toward Beulah, killing Frank Howard and Allie Smith after they rode to aid neighbor H. B. Rogers. The blaze burned hundreds of acres, 50 tons of hay, and left two horses burned in the flames. Howard, about 40, leaves a wife and four children. Smith, 21, recently attended Dakota University.

A wildfire destroyed a tree claim and burned Charles Wrights barn south of Rog era but spared stock. The blaze, lasting through noon, may have started when Carl Heckel raked and burned thistles. a whirlwind spread embers, causing the conflagration with little blame on Heckel.

Growth of Cattle Industry in Davison County
The cattle boom in Davison County shows farmers increasing herds from six to ten head to 40 50 head per farm. O L Branson reports selling about 2000 head to farmers in nearby counties since February, worth roughly 56000, with most cattle going to Mitchell tributaries. The influx includes new settlers and carloads, quadrupling county cattle since last fall and promising steady income and stronger finances for farmers.

May Start Passenger Train Between Mitchell and Sioux Falls
Agent Wilt hopes the Omaha road will add a daylight passenger service linking Mitchell to Sioux Falls and, if approved, connect with a St. Paul Omaha Train. Officials aim to run Mitchell to St. Paul with a 7 am departure, linking Worthington, Minnesota, and arriving by evening. Wilt has pressed officials for quicker improved service.

Orators and athletes from six colleges will contest here on May 18 and 19. Eastern Star Chapter hosted a cheerful card and dance party for many friends.
Social Evening With Cards At Masonic Hall
Eastern Star Chapter hosted a well attended winter card party in the Masonic hall. Progressive five tables played with top prizes to Mrs F H Winsor and Dr E B Bracy. Lone hand winners were Mrs M Jacquemai and Frank Weller. Consolation prizes went to Mrs W Abbey and Avery Frink. After 11 dancing and refreshments followed with Rathbun orchestra providing music. Guests from Mt Vernon included Mr and Mrs M C Betts Mr and Mrs Frank Hatch Mrs H H Garep and John Momson.

Driving Park Club Plans Summer Horse Races
Local horsemen show strong interest in forming a driving club to host one or two race meetings this summer. A track near the city is being prepared for training and eight to ten horses in town may run under the 30 second mark. Most entries are pacers with pacers likely to dominate the event as plans include a preliminary meeting on a forthcoming Saturday.

Woman Dies After Gasoline Fire At Sioux Falls Home
Mrs. F. J. Boyer died in Sioux Falls after selecting gasoline instead of kerosene to light a fire. A match sparked an explosion, her dress caught fire, and she sustained severe burns to the face, breast, and arms. She had lived in Mitchell before moving to east First Street, where she worked as a dressmaker. her husband was away at the time of the accident.

University Club and Town Nine Play At Athletic Park
A Monday afternoon game at Athletic Park between the University club and a local nine ended with the town team winning 20 to 0 after play resumed past the seventh inning. Vernon and Nolt starred for the University, while Gregory Barber and Warne led the town battery. The University showed early runs but poor teamwork. The town players, more rested, closed out the thirteen to twelve lead at the end of the seventh before the full nine innings were completed. The University plans to improve in two to three weeks ahead of next month's athletic contest.
