Fire swept Mitchells opera house early Sunday morning causing extensive interior damage. Firemen battled three streams of water for hours, saving parts of the structure while most scenery and seating suffered heavy loss. Insurance fully covers the estimated five thousand dollar damage.
The owner estimates at least 5000 dollars needed to restore the house and notes all seats are water damaged. Insurance coverage on the building is about 10000 dollars. Plans for rebuilding have not been decided, though restoration is hoped. The cause remains a mystery with theories of arson or spontaneous combustion. Mitchell awaits the building’s early reuse.
Weather limited attendance at the Baptist church event hosted by the W C T U and Baptist ladies. Toasts praised Mrs. Kline for temperance work, with remarks from Rev. Hager, Rev. Gunderson, and Geo A Sibby. Kline, returning from Chicago, noted Mitchell’s growth and thanked attendees for a pleasant gathering.
Oscar Tell won the local oratorical contest at Huron College with the Puritans as his topic and will represent the college in Mitchell for the state contest on the 17th of next month. The college previously placed second in the state contest and won first at the inter-state level, signaling strong early results for Huron.
The War Song Concert drew local volunteers and old soldiers for an evening of musical numbers and readings to support the Encampment Fund. University of South Dakota and Plankinton teams played a baseball classic, 13 to 12, amid rain and mud, with Howell and Grimm as battery and Mrs. McLain leading major choruses and a strong display by the G A R members and youth performers. A large audience joined in the finale drill and tableau, and proceeds benefited the encampment fund.
Friday evening a Civil War song concert was presented for the local post encampment fund. The program, directed by Mrs May McLain and aided by the G A R W R C and S of V, drew a large audience who praised the stirring tunes from start to finish.
The State Register reports debt is at its lowest since statehood, aided by rising land values and steady influx of settlers. Projections suggest repayment within ten years with only one mill tax for interest and sinking fund, lowering future taxes and possibly wiping bonds. Calls for higher salaries for state officers and constitutional reforms to improve legal pay and provisions.
