At a mass meeting in Centerville the Law and Order league was formed with W. Isbee elected chairman and E. M. Waterbury secretary. The group vows to take an active role in city affairs. Pierre Governor Crawford appointed West Ege of Centerville to the state telephone commission.
At the state board of agriculture meeting in Huron, J W Campbell of Nuron was elected president with W S Hill of Alexandria as vice president. Campbell becomes superintendent of grounds and Hill heads the horse and cattle department. Peterson of Vermillion leads swine and sheep. A new agricultural hall and multiple barns are planned, with improvements to existing buildings and a April 30 meeting to let contracts.
Pierre South Dakota April 18 the governor stays out of the wardenship fight at the state penitentiary Sioux Falls deferring to the appointing board. George M Root Sioux Falls leads the field with Frank Kennicott and O S Swenson as notable contenders while Parmley era warden H T Parmley remains a reference point as supporters rally and await the board’s final decision.
Huron South Dakota raises three thousand dollars to buy land from Western Town Lot company for a park. City council accepts the proposal and plans immediate surveying and planting of trees and shrubs. Local donor M. M. Winter contributed one thousand dollars to the fund.

A Boston oil tank explosion caused $100,000 in damage to the Commonwealth Oil company the Borne Schrymser company and Howe French and Co oil refiners. Several men suffered burns from the hot oil spreading across the site.

Aberdeen South Dakota April 15 a terrify wind storm toppled walls of the Sherman hotel ruins left by fire causing debris to strike the Sherman saloon roof and narrowly miss several men. Twelve workers in the saloon were panic struck. At Frederick the Farmers State Bank roof blew off and a heavy timber fell into a butcher shop narrowly missing employees.
In answer to how cities proceed to adopt the primary law Attorney General S. W. Clark states section 4 exempts municipal officers but allows adoption by a majority vote at any municipal election. No specific submission method or notice is required beyond what is used for officer elections, and no formalities can block a fair public expression.
Nelson A. Brucker, a longtime Black Hills miner near Lead, died recently and was buried with about $200 in his coffin per his wish. He said relatives scattered across the country had been unkind and he did not want them to quarrel over his fortune.
Lead South Dakota dispatch reports Father Noesen of Deadwood appointed acting bishop of the Diocese during Bishop Stariha’s two month absence in Rome to visit the pope.
Miss Mabel Kirk, 12, was bitten on the forefinger by a scorpion that crawled from a banana cluster in her father’s Avon store. Dr Hollingworth treated her at once, tying the finger and cauterizing the wound. She is reported none the worse for the incident due to prompt care.
In Java South Dakota on April 15 Edwin Oster yy old son of a widow Mrs Oster was kicked by a horse. He suffered a fractured skull and multiple jaw fractures along with paralysis of the left side. He lived several days in agony before death.
S M Walters of the Northwestern railroad announced in Bonesteel that the line to Dallas will soon be under construction and train service established there before June. Dallas lies five miles west of Gregory on the Tripp county line and will be the terminus until Tripp county opens for settlement, attracting investors from across the country.
Sioux Falls April 17 Judge Carland sentenced convicted federal prisoners. Dan Lax received 30 days and $100 fine for peddling liquor without license in McCook county. Watkins and Morgan got three years each for larceny on Rosebud reservation. Cadotte and New Barth four years each for a sensational raid from Standing Rock. Ferron four years for wholesale horse theft from Rosebud. Medicine Horn three months and $100 fine for liquor introduction to Yankton reservation. Littl Owl six months and $100 fine for similar charge. Burns one year and one day plus $100 fine for selling liquor at Wagner. Wells one year and one day plus $200 fine. Rockboy six months for liquor introduction. Traversie six months for introducing liquor into Cheyenne River reservation. Lyman six months and $100 fine. Dodge 20, plea of guilty to missing objectionable letter, fined $100. to be jailed in Minnehaha until paid. May Lyman and others noted for mitigating circumstances.
The board reports 422 of 659 applicants passed the March examinations in Pierre. Two earned state and life diplomas, 134 sought first grade certificates with 35 granted, 70 received second grade. Of 521 applications, 5 for second grade and 4240? passed. 2 were rejected. About 65 percent overall passed.
Huron South Dakota April 17 At a special city council meeting Mayor J A Cleaver announced his retirement after nine years guiding the city He will be succeeded by Neil Mekal Aldermen Lowe and Tinneen also retired and will be replaced by John Dougherty and Clarence Melivane
Ball players of Hudson, C. April 17 organized a local club at the home of Mr Amand Clement. Officers named include President Hi HW Cable Vice President Joseph Henrichs Secretary Treasurer I 33 Cassill and directors A Downs and E J Iguck.
Governor Crawford and the state capitol commission head to Hot Springs to inspect proposed stone for the new capitol. While away the governor will speak at a Gregory banquet on April 29 and address a large assembly at Burke on May 1.

A new tabernacle site will be built. about 1900 offer to serve, $1500 raised in minutes, with election day approaching and saloonkeepers alarmed about a dry vote.
Editor Kort right of the Fairfax Sun-Review is freed after days in the Gregory county jail following criminal libel proceedings brought by Wred Huston ex county commissioner and sheriff candidate. He had phone links between cell and office to publish editorials and items. Prosecutors agreed to release him. further criminal libel charges may follow. Kort most recently lived in Sioux City.
Ralph Voorhees of Clinton New Jersey funded Voorhees hall a modern $115000 campus edifice at Huron college and the Elizabeth Voorhees dormitory costing $50000. His death in New Jersey yesterday dampened the celebratory reception by the Ladies' College association.
Gary South Dakota April 138. Judge Gordon resigns after eight years as postmaster and supports A. W. Bartels, a leading local businessman, as his successor.
Miss Atje Franshem of Hamilton township committed death by her own action by taking carbolic acid in Platte on April 13.
Miss Lydia Moore, with her mother and brothers, filed on three quarter sections in Faulk county, South Dakota. While they received patents after fourteen months, she delayed final proof for five years. A contestant challenged the claim, triggering a court trial that overwhelmed her, leading to a breakdown and admission to an insane hospital in Yankton.
Sioux Falls reports Bishop W. H. Hare of the South Dakota Episcopal diocese leaving for New York for a serious operation. The long time Dakota resident hinted the procedure may be fatal and has returned from coast to direct Easter cathedral services and oppose a Sioux Falls divorce referendum. Special prayers will be offered statewide for his recovery and safe return.
A devastating fire at Canton South Dakota on April 16 caused about 20000 dollars in damages with 10000 dollars insured. The Mutual Lumber company shed and Milwaukee pump house were consumed while Bowman Kranz yard was saved. Fire weather included a northwest gale fanning burning embers across blocks toward the river and into Iowa. G L Gray of Lake City Iowa and Canton Owen owned the property.
In Sioux Falls on April 16 a federal jury quickly found Thomas Ferron guilty on three indictments accusing him of taking about thirty head of horses from the Rosebud reservation. Earlier, William Roberts and Frank Long pleaded guilty to larceny on the same reservation and received thirty days in county jail plus a $100 fine each.
Sioux Falls April 16. Attorney General Clark writes to the Argus Leader editor disputing an April 8 Redfield item about a political gathering at Huron and a Governor Crawford backed action against the lumber trust. He states no meeting occurred, no directive was given, and any action would follow law to convict or expose unlawful methods under penal code sections 770 to 781.
Cincinnati April 16 The Ohio department of the Ancient Order of United Workmen is to be abandoned per Ohio Grand Recorder Ree ver. A suit has been filed to appoint a receiver to wind up its affairs as the fraternal organization faces difficulties in convincing members of the need for changes.
