Professor Ed Amherst Ott of Drake School of Oratory delivered a lecture on Sour Grapes at Champeny’s Opera House, discussing heredity and marriage alliances. The talk mixed humor with serious insight, highlighting education to reduce human discrepancies and praising Ott’s masterful delivery.
Jos Gotto Western Union manager marries Christina Smart after arriving from Grafton North Dakota. The couple wed at 8 pm with Rev A C Stevens and plan to live above Smith and James store. Gotto lauded for service. bride previously Western Union manager in Grafton. Flood news from Redfield reports Jim River eight feet above record high and Spink county trains halted.
Wagon bridge remains in the county and travel is nearly stopped. Sections of the quarter are submerged and farmers lose last year's crops. Two drownings reported John Ball of Tulare and Robert Mc Closky of Athol. Henry Struvite and two sons also drowned south of Prank fort. Lundstrum lost a dozen cattle and seven horses. Northwestern Telephone Exchange Co plans to extend lines from Sioux Falls to Mitchell, offering connections to St Paul Minneapolis and Sioux City. A local exchange may follow if the long distance network is completed, with materials on site and right of way secured between Salem and Mitchell. Hood's Sarsaparilla promises purification and better health as spring approaches.
A kerosene mishap in Mitchell seriously burned Mrs. Lyons and her 12 year old daughter. Neighbors and University students aided, doctors say Mrs. Lyons has slim chances of recovery while the girl’s burns are less severe. A charity fund started for the family as Lyons, a former Milwaukee blacksmith, mourns his infant child left motherless. A separate accident in Sanborn County left Mrs. Myer with a broken elbow after a buggy crash en route to Mitchell.
The Salvation Army resumes work in Mitchell after years away, warmly received by clergy and residents. Ensign and Mrs. Jewell led the opening meeting at Champeny's Opera House, with pastors present and a festive street procession. The Army plans nightly meetings for 30 days with three new members joining from Sioux Falls. Services are set for Sunday at 3 p.m. and evening, and residents are urged to attend. Jos F Scheuer travels to Milwaukee and will return in about ten days.
