The Faulk County Republican convention met at 1 pm with many delegates. It endorsed Coe I Crawford for governor, allocates eleven delegates to Sioux Falls on May 4, and urges a primary election law to replace caucuses while praising Roosevelt and Crawford.
Conventions held Saturday April 9 across several counties endorsed national and state officials and nominated or instructed for candidates. Butte backed the national and state slate with Martin for congress and W J Chiesman for railroad commissioner. Davison and Hughes backed similar tickets. Ben Homme urged Snow for governor. Bruie supported J M Greene for national committeeman. Hughes county called a harmonious meeting with support for Charles H Burke.
Anti Crawford Republicans win twelve of nineteen delegates at Clay County caucus in Vermilion South Dakota. Vermillion township delegates reportedly oppose Crawford. County convention to pick delegates for the state gathering at Sioux Falls next month. Eighty seven delegates entitle seats. the convention will elect twenty six to the state gathering.
Armour South Dakota prepares for April 19 city election to choose a mayor and aldermen. Democrats and Republicans clash over a compromise while Republican K G Foster announces a mayoral run on the ticket.
Nineteen single men in Carthage South Dakota publish a marriage appeal in a local newspaper. The list of signatories includes A J Murphy W L Scott J J Kelsey H J Ravenhorst Tom Serine Frank H Tanner and others inviting eligible women nationwide to respond. Applicants need not be South Dakota residents.
Huron South Dakota April 14 The first official crop report from the weather bureau notes wheat progress in early April with oats and some crops sown in the southeast. A late storm on April 7 8 brought rain and snow and halted field work though soil moisture improves prospects for germination. Livestock losses occur on open ranges as cold temperatures persist. Grass starts slowly and winter rye and limited winter wheat are generally favorable. Potatoes planted in extreme southeast with limited gardening reported.
James Petty, a Fall River county rancher living ten miles southeast of Hot Springs South Dakota, was killed when a load of posts toppled on him while he was traveling. His 16 year old son witnessed the tragedy as the wagon wheel passed over Petty’s head. The son later rode three miles to summon help and return with a team to transport the body to town. Petty was uncle to Deputy Sheriff Petty and owned a leading ranch in the county.
M. B. Ocumpaugh is reappointed fish and game warden for Lawrence county by the county commissioners at the request of the Lawrence County Fish and Game Protective association. The salary is 74 dollars a month and he may appoint deputies. His previous campaign led to several prosecutions and a near suppression of offenses, notably curbing dynamite fishing in local streams.
In Huron South Dakota April 14 losses from the late snow and wind storm were smaller than feared. Geo H McHathron owner of a Hereford ranch north of Huron reports 43 cattle lost while away and his foreman ill. Clark and Venable lost eight to ten head and other ranches lost two to four. OQ A Parks of Iowa township reported many sheep killed.
Huron South Dakota officials include W. A. Ritschlag as chief H. W. Herman first assistant Robert Blume second assistant H. G. Cooley secretary Earl Howard treasurer and Fred Lauer captain of the chemical unit The department will not enter the state tournament this year.
Special Representative A. H. Hampson of Des Moines organized a Yeomen lodge with 30 members in Armour on Monday night and reported strong prospects for steady membership growth.

Senator William A. Clark of Montana is reported threatened by tuberculosis and sails from New York to Genoa. He will consult specialists in Milan and Berlin, spending three months with leading pulmonary experts after months of acute bronchitis.
Sheriff A W Mitterer arrested Thomas Moody of Welcome North Carolina for the February murder of Thomas Crawford at a farm sale near Moody farm. Moody fears lynching as locals demand mob action and awaits transfer from Surry County North Carolina.
The weekly crop summary notes unfavourable conditions east of the Rockies with too much moisture in the middle gulf and central valleys. Winter wheat damage is greatest in Indiana Illinois and parts of Ohio and Michigan. Some states show improvement and spring wheat seeding runs ahead in the south while rain and snow storms delay work in early March. Oat seeding advances in Nebraska Kansas Iowa and the Ohio valley though moisture hampers progress there.
H J Bateman in Los Angeles county jail for bigamy admits since 1890 he engaged to marry at least thirty young women, mostly from prominent families. He claims two recent marriages were forced, cites a detective intimidation claim, and says he is sane except for being “crazy about love.” He credits charm and talking about themselves for his success.
The tug Frank Canfield ran aground and sank off Point Sable near Manistee April 13. Captain Henry Smith engineer Charles Kopfer and helper William Justmann drowned. James Smith and Gus Szaszitsky survived after using a life raft. Vessel valued at $5,000.
Charles A Beecher, confidant of Abraham Lincoln and 1860 convention delegate, dies in Marysville Ohio of heart disease. He helped secure Ulysses Grant a captain’s commission in the Illinois volunteers and leaves a large fortune.
Premier Maura was wounded but not seriously by a would be assassin in Barcelona as he left the palace. The attacker Joaquin iguel Artao, 19, was imprisoned amid initial misreports of a fatal assault.
The special House committee report on post office charges against members finds no proof of personal financial gain or breach of duty. It urges limiting executive matter involvement and notes letters were written under varied pressures and secrecy. Senator Tillman returned to the Senate chamber as post office bills move, with Gorman amendment tabled.
Lincoln Neb April 14 Attorney General Prout wins leave from the Nebraska Supreme Court to sue in ejectment to dispossess squatters on 2300 acres in Boyd county claimed by the permanent school fund. Lands valued at 75000. Follmer had resisted state ownership and the Legislature had deeded land to squatters but he refused to sign. Governor Mickey’s influence shifts Prout toward a stronger school fund position.
Roy Martin a Kansas City Kansas high school student was killed by Gregory a black youth during a ball game insult flare up. Louis Gregory was arrested as a crowd of armed negras gathered to guard the jail amid fears of mob violence.
The New York Republican state convention at Carnegie Hall adopted a platform backing McKinley and Roosevelt, endorsing Panama canal policy and protectionist tariffs, and affirming loyalty to party leadership. Delegates were instructed to pursue Roosevelt's nomination, with adjournment until 4 p.m.
New York readers learn August Belmont banker and railroad man made a covert trip to Esopus to meet Chief Judge Alton B. Parker. Belmont allegedly altered West Shore schedules to hide his destination while ex Senator David Hill greeted him at a distant station and the two then traveled to Rosemont for the rendezvous.
In St Paul on April 13 the motion by I. H. Harriman and Winslow S. Pierce to file an intervening petition in the Northern Securities settlement was heard before the full bench. They object to the directors plan for a pro rata distribution of Great Northern and Northern Pacific stock to Northern Securities holders.
In Berlin at the Metropole theater last night a play titled A Mad Year mocked President Roosevelt and Miss Alice Roosevelt. The rough rider costume appeared for the president while police halted the use of Roosevelt's name, prompting the substitution of Mr and Mrs Washington.
The Colon of the Pacific Mail Steamship Line, 23 March departure from San Francisco for Panama with passengers and cargo, was wrecked on a rock near Remedios. Injuries occurred but no lives are believed lost. The consignee reports the incident to the merchant exchange in San Francisco.
