South Route Named for Scenic Highway Venture

The South Dakota Scenic Highway preference was adopted 24 to 20 after a split North versus South route debate. Alexandria to Bridgewater to Emery won with a detailed Nelson map showing county paths and engineering rationale. Squires praised north route efforts and urged united work. officials urged immediate organization and bond-backed river-bridge progress in Pennington County to spur statewide action.

Northern Route Convention Plans Sioux Falls to Mitchell Road

Delegates at the meeting, after addressing Secretary Wood, arranged county meetings along the proposed route for April 9 to form a county committee and launch the project. John Nelson will lead east of Mitchell, with jf. K. Mather in charge west to Chamberlain. A second convention may follow to expedite initiation.

Freight Train Wreck At Murdo After Cow On Track

Milwaukee road freight No. 91 derailed three miles east of Murdo South Dakota when a cow on the track caused the wreck. Engineer J M Ricks and crew escaped with minor injuries after the engine toppled down a ten foot bank. Wrecking crews from Murdo and Mitchell clearing tracks. traffic delayed but rerouted as repairs proceed.

Iowa men arrested in alleged AI race betting scheme

Police captured three men in the De Jonghe hotel at 14 East Monroe Street after they sought drafts totaling 10,000 from a bank in New Providence Iowa to fund an alleged business of placing bets on sure winners. The arrests followed an undercover investigation.

Banks Lose Out In Assessment Case In South Carolina

Sioux Falls, South Carolina. Minnehaha county won a victory when the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed a circuit court ruling and sustained a demurrer to the bank tax case. About five thousand dollars was involved as the State Banking and Trust Company and Sioux Falls Savings Bank challenged 1910 taxes after the state board of equalization raised bank stock valuation to 40 percent. The banks argued taxation must be uniform, while the county asserted classification allows different tax rates and full valuation, and that bank stock on 40 percent valuation showed no discrimination. State's Attorney Bergh had demurred. Judge Jones overruled, leading to appeal.

Miners Ordered Back to Work After Referendum

London leaders of the miners' organization called off the big coal strike after reviewing the referendum results. The vote to resume work passed 201,013 to 244,011 against resuming, failing under the two thirds rule, and the strike was declared defeated.

National Sanitarium at Hot Springs Reaches Capacity

Hot Springs South Dakota asserts record enrollment with 475 patients, mostly from state homes. An expansion includes a new conservatory wing and upgraded water pumping. Outdoor concerts begin May 16 with regimental band, moving pictures twice weekly through Sept 30.

Lafollette Men Put Up Ticket for This State

LaFollette club in South Dakota filed the straight Lafollette ticket of delegates to the national Republican convention. At large delegates named Elder Deadwood, Alseth Lake Preston, Bowen Huron, Brown Canton. District delegates named Astrud Sioux Falls, Berven Centerville in 1st. Fletcher Aberdeen, Yarmouth St Lawrence in 2nd. Johnson Fort Pierre, Robinson Rapid City in 3rd. The slate follows a mail referendum without Roosevelt input, chosen from the most endorsed candidates.

Local firm wins county bridge contract bid

County commissioners reviewed bids from Monarch Engineer Co Standard Bridge Co Ward Weighton and Pioneer Bridge Co and awarded the entire county bridge project to Pioneer Bridge Co at about ten percent under rivals. A N Brodstrup leads the firm with partner Fred Bjodstrup a veteran local builder. They plan more county and nearby work citing solid county reputation.
