Freight Train Wreck At Murdo After Cow On Track
Milwaukee road freight No. 91 derailed three miles east of Murdo South Dakota when a cow on the track caused the wreck. Engineer J M Ricks and crew escaped with minor injuries after the engine toppled down a ten foot bank. Banks Lose Out In Assessment Case In South Carolina
Sioux Falls, South Carolina. Minnehaha county won a victory when the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed a circuit court ruling and sustained a demurrer to the bank tax case. About five thousand dollars was involved as the State Banking and Trust Company and Sioux Falls Savings Bank challenged 1910 taxes after the state board of equalization raised bank stock valuation to 40 percent. The banks argued taxation must be uniform, while the county asserted classification allows different tax rates and full valuation, and that bank stock on 40 percent valuation showed no discrimination. State's Attorney Bergh had demurred. Judge Jones overruled, leading to appeal.
