April convention in Huson endorses Governor Crawford for U S Senate, praising Roosevelt era policies and calling for the physical valuation of public service properties. The platform endorses La Follette ideas, tariff reform, railroad rate tightening, interstate regulation, and a state county depository law to curb interest on state funds.
State Chairman W C Cook called the Republican state convention to order in the city auditorium at 22 15 o clock. Rev Broderick Long offered invocation. McNulty and Elrod named temporary chairmen. vote showed McNulty ahead 266 to 222 13 with shifts in Himlin and Spink. Progressives cheered as McNulty thanked the party. Committees on credentials resolutions rules and order and organization were appointed by nine members each.
The passage lists numerous committee members including H. P. Pickard Spink G N Caster Charles Mix P W Peterson and others from counties like Codington Brookings and Walworth. Senator Byrne moves to send all resolutions to the secretary for committee review. Stalwart resolutions backing Roosevelt and supporting Taft’s tariff plank appear in the record.

Telegraph message from Watertown reports the death of Doc Wm N Greer of Hastings Nebraska. Greer was a prominent South Dakota horseman who had driven on nearly every track in the state. His two brothers went to bring the body home. The death was sudden. his health had been sound the prior week.
Arlington South Carolina April 9 Fred Lundy and Robert Trumm narrowly escaped asphyxiation when a kerosene stove at their bedside clogged and filled the room with vapor. Trumm woke and forced a window open, reviving companion was difficult but both are recovering in serious condition. Pierre South Dakota April 9 L A Munson former deputy state treasurer has filed for secretary of state and is the only candidate from either faction to declare for the position.

Watertown South Dakota April 7 34 cattle vanished overnight from a Milwaukee and St Paul railcar. Detectives have worked four days in the city after cattle were unloaded for feeding Monday night and by morning nothing remained or indicated what happened to them.
In Flandreau South Dakota on April 7 the jury convicted Henry Hendrickson a wealthy Moody County resident of second degree murder for the Halloween night killing of Harvey Bradfield. Witnesses testified Bradfield saw a flash from Hendrickson yard and that shots were fired as he neared Hendrickson home.
The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in Chicago accredits Vermillion Brookings Madison Webster and All Saints Sioux Falls setting a total of 12 state schools accepted in lieu of nationwide college examinations.
Plankinton reporter Glenn Starr, jailed on a bigamy charge, escaped last evening. Starr was accused of trying to compel a local woman to marry him, while the bigamy charge originated in Iowa.
Stickney South Dakota April 7 vandals destroyed wagons and merchandise of two Jewish shopkeepers operating a small store in the farming community. Property valued at 600 dollars. Authorities offer a fifty dollar reward for the arrest of the perpetrators.
In Huron South Dakota on April 7 a large gathering of leading citizens discussed the divorce law referendum passed by the last legislature. Bishop Hare of Sioux Falls and Rev W H Thrall led preparations for a vigorous campaign to secure voter approval at the upcoming election.
The Royal Brewing Company of Kansas City files a complaint with the Interstate Commerce Commission accusing Adams American Pacific United States and Wells Fargo Express companies of refusing to accept shipments of beer to Kansas Iowa and Oklahoma. The suit claims malt liquors sent C. O. D. for decades are being blocked and argues the practice violates the Interstate Commerce Act.

Yankton South Dakota April 6 report from the state horticultural society notes tree culture raises land value. C V Gandner planted five acres of ash 15 years ago and is offered 8000 for the tract. Whiting Yankton bought 10 acres of cottonwood in 1891 and still holds 150000 feet of lumber valued at 20 dollars per thousand.
Ss. D. Bard of Pharmacy will hold an examination for candidates at Aberdeen April 22. The Board of Pharmacy announced the date and location, inviting applicants to register in advance for the testing session.
Alfred G. Van derbilt, the wealthiest young man in America, offered his wife 1 500 000 in settlement of all claims from her divorce suit. Julius Geriouex livery and garage owner of Armour South Dakota suffered a crushed right wrist when the starting lever of an automobile snapped back after being released. The incident occurred as he prepared to transport traveling men to a nearby town. A gas choke is suspected as the cause. He had recently taken out an accident insurance policy.
The state’s attorney seeks to set aside a deed by Win Hippen of Charles Mix county after he murdered Harm Hippen with a shotgun and transferred his property to the victim’s wife. The argument is that Hippen has means to cover trial costs, not the county. A hearing with Judge Smith in Yankton is scheduled for Friday.
Arlington South Carolina April 4 John Pearson a farmer near Lake Norden drowned while crossing the lake neck en route to his home. The team was spotted in water near ice by a northbound train conductor the wagon front wheels attached to the harness but the rear wheels and box disappeared during the drift. A search party failed to recover the body as current carried it away.
Mrs. W. Barkley Henry of Philadelphia arrives in Sioux Falls for lung health treatment but an attorney arranged her housing, a finding that this single case should not label the city a health resort.
In Huron South Dakota on April 4 Sheriff Young escorted Charles Mannie and Margaret Minnie to the Sioux Falls penitentiary. Mannie and his wife were convicted of keeping a house of ill fame and received two years for him and one year for her. They were also convicted of perjury and each received two more years in the penitentiary.
Governor Crawford appoints John T. Medin of Sioux Falls as Minnehaha County judge to serve until a successor is elected and qualified, filling the vacancy caused by the death of D. R. Balley.
Winfred South Dakota reports a new telephone company organized with a local exchange planned. Rural lines will connect the town to all parts of the county.
The United States land office in Huron South Dakota closed with the end of business yesterday and today the territory becomes part of the Pierre land district.
Senator Gamble reported from the Indian affairs committee a bill to authorize sale of surplus lands on the Cheyenne and Standing Rock reservations in South Dakota and North Dakota with amendments. The measure opens an 18 mile wide east west strip to the Missouri river and a 36 mile wide north south strip along the reservations, uniting eastern and western parts of the state.
Herbert E. Murphy sued the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in federal court in Sioux Falls for 15000 in damages claiming injury from a defective automatic coupler on a freight car. A jury awarded 5000 but Judge Carland remanded for a new trial.
J T Wilkins homesteader near Herrick sues the town of Bonesteel for 3200 in the state circuit court claiming injuries from a 1904 runaway in Bonesteel. The town council rejected the claim, and the case moves to circuit court this month for adjustment.
