Fertilizer Guidelines for Manitoba Forage Stands
Specialists from the Manitoba Department of Agriculture and Conservation say properly fertilized forage stands can yield up to 1 1/2 tons more hay per acre than unfertilized plots. They recommend 11-48-0 at 75-150 lb/acre on legume or grass-legume stands and 16-20-0 at 100-200 lb/acre on grey wooded soils. More precise guidance will come after soil testing. Fertilizer can be applied in April but fall applications are often better or at least as good if spring work is difficult.

The Agriculture Department urges fall fertilizer application for forage crops using broadcast spreaders rented or borrowed from dealers. Large farms justify owning a spreader as it can cover 10–12 acres per hour and benefits persist into year two. Tests near Ninette show yields up 3,250 lb per acre with 100 lb of 11-48 and 125 lb of 11-. Information on soil testing is available, and grass seed orders are slow with 1300 acres for sale.

Manitoba Woman’s Institute Holds September Meeting
Mrs. A. M. Hantin Life Member received a Manitoba Lift Membership ahead of the program. Fourteen members and five visitors attended at the Community Centre on Sept 13. The group planned a November amateur concert with the Associated Canadian Travellers and a Sept 27 bake sale for the Children’s Aid Society. The blind canvass runs Sept 30 to Oct 5. 4-H mothers were invited Sept 20 for program details. Hamiota District Hospital Receives Accreditation Status
The Board of Trustees of Hamiota and District Hospital No. 7A announced accreditation by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation after a recent survey. Eligibility required provincial licensure, at least twelve months operation, listing in the Canadian Hospital Directory, and a minimum of three active medical staff members.
