Fall rye varieties Petkus Sangaste licensed in Canada 1957
Canada reports the Petkus and Sangaste fall rye varieties licensed for sale this year along with Dakold and Antelope as satisfactory for Western Canada. Petkus is German origin with fair lodging resistance and large blue seed, maturing slightly after Antelope. Sangaste from Estonia has long heads, tall straw, large uniform tan seed, maturing after Antelope, and slightly hardier winter protection than Petkus but less so than Antelope or Dakold. These European types may yield more in limited prairie areas but are less prairie-adapted overall. Tetra Petkus is distinct and should not be grown in the prairie region due to severe winter-kill.
