Education Minister Ed Turnbull announces a 35000 grant to 16 divisions aiding Grades 10 to 12 writing. The program funds markers to assess student essays every two weeks, boosting language skills across English social studies and other subjects in small rural high schools. Local markers may gain employment, supporting community residents.
Premier Ed Schreyer and federal Energy Minister Alastair Gillespie inaugurated an energy conservation van to tour Manitoba. Beginning mid September, the jointly sponsored van will visit schools and service clubs for four months, focusing on lighting heating transport and conservation ethics. target audiences include high school students with educational programs and DIY guides on home retrofit.

A new Social Worker, Bob Dacquay, joins Hamiota District Health Centre to provide free services across Archie, Miniota, Hamiota, Blanshard, Wallace, Woodworth and two-thirds of Sifton. Services include family therapy, marriage counselling, and community development activities. Reach Hamiota on Wednesdays and Fridays at 764-2302 or Virden on Mondays and Tuesdays at 748-2321. Brandon supervision on Thursdays.
Manitoba chosen by the Canadaan Badminton Association for a six week series led by Allan Baird of Ottawa. He will visit Brandon area from October 5 starting with an opening session October 6 at Hamiota Collegiate, then weekly sessions at Birtle Brandon Boissevain Carberry Hamiota Rivers Souris and Virden through November 10. Attendees urged, info via Al Robertson.
