Report catalogs Manitoba fire losses last year with 35 deaths and about 7.5 million dollars in property damage. Most fatalities were on farms, many children, amid water shortages and dangerous storage practices. Experts urge family fire plans and safer exits to reduce casualties.
The Woman's Aid to Ham iota Hospital District No 7A met in the community room on Friday April 28th with Mrs. R. O. Frazer presiding. Fifteen districts answered roll call and 32 hours of mending were done this month. The buying committee reported purchases of sheeting gowns drapes and more. Mrs Frazer reported on the Seal Lake regional meeting. Stock reports showed a good supply though not overstocked. Mrs Gow of Beulah read from the year book. The annual hospital tea was postponed until fall. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction.
The Manitoba Senior Baseball League was organized in Brandon with five clubs: Brandon Cloverleafs Mauphin Redbirds Binscorth Buffaloes Riverside and Hamiltona. The winner earns a bye into the Manitoba Association playoffs. Laurie Artiss is president and Al Richardson vice-president with Don Sumner as secretary treasurer. Season starts around May 24 and ends mid July with a double round robin schedule. Top four advance to best of five semi finals and finals. The league will award a new North South division trophy and the champion may add two players before Stark Trophy play.
Robert Vernon Andrew, aged 56, died of a heart attack at his Virden home. Born October 29, 1904 in Miniota, he married Irene Henderson in 1934 and farmed in Glen Lochar before serving with the Manitoba Dragoons in World War II. He later worked in Virden real estate and is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter Joyce Eilers, three grandchildren, and a sister in Portland, Oregon.
The R. M. of Miniota Council met April 25 1961 in the Municipal Hall with full attendance. Actions include approval of minutes tax bylaw third reading for By Law 1414 and 1415, budget adjustments plus an audit of school district levies and approvals for diesel fuel purchases plants and machinery payments and grasshopper control arrangements. The meeting adjourned to June 6 1961.
Robert John McLean of Strethelair died suddenly on April 22 at age 78. Born January 25, 1884 in Strathblair, he farmed east of town before retiring. A breeder of Percheron horses and registered Jerseys, he served on the Council and School Board and belonged to the Agricultural Society, Foresters, and Orangemen Lodges. He and his wife celebrated 50 years of marriage on November 1, 1960. she died February 3, 1961. Survived by son Ken and daughters Violet, Sylvia, Jean. funeral held Tuesday, April 25.
Mrs Douglas Leland hosted an April 27 open house to honor her parents Mr and Mrs Dunc McConnell on their 50th wedding anniversary. Guests included relatives from Ontario Alberta and Brandon with a supper and an evening of old friends, bagpipe music, and a Highland fling.
Mrs. A. McCoy 79 of Burnaby died at Assiniboine Hospital Brandon on Sunday April 30. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. S. Wale of Decker and several sons in Saskatchewan and the Coast. The body will be sent to Burnaby for burial in the family plot.
Forty nine teachers and two practice teachers gathered at Hamista School on April 19 at 8 00 p m for the Birdtail River School Division AGM. Mr Tibbatts outlined the salary amendment with the Birdtail River Division MTS as delegates Reynolds Irwin and Milton presented resolutions. Milton described joining the Manitoba Teachers Credit Union while Hamiota principal F McKinnon spoke on his goodwill tour with the Winnipeg Maroons to Czechoslovakia. Souvenirs and slides were shown, and a lunch was served by the Hamiota staff.
Trustees Fulton Selby Gam ey Stimpson Reynolds Hunter and Inspector Funk attend the April 26 1961 meeting in Shoal Lake with Stewart E McLean present to discuss school affairs Minutes of April 19 approved. Motions include approving Financial Statement No 4/61 tender for 25 ballot boxes and ad hoc committees to publicize building by law and sponsor a Music and Speech Arts Festival with a May 2 meeting in Isabella Community Centre to discuss Beulah Isabella closures.

Sympathy to Mrs H Levins on sister W McLaren s death in Dauphin April 23 and double funeral April 25. Harry Reid funeral held in Clark Leatherdale with West Lawn burial. Brisbin visiting Hamida Hospital. Debby Oliman visiting grandparents A Adams. Bud Kelly and Winnipeg trip with D Bell family. Spence and Bob Bell finish terms at Brandon College. Roblin visitors Campbell family at Frank Campbell residence.
Beulah notes show Mr and Mrs J Tomiski and family visiting from Brandon and Mr J Chisholm returning from Prince Edward Island. Larry Stowe from WaWa Ontario visits, Don Stowe accompanies him. A farewell for Mr and Mrs Lashuita and Marvin precedes their move to Elphinstone. Russell Asselstine and wife relocate north of Beulah. Red Cross donations total 361.00 this year with thanks from the committee.
The Explorer group met Friday April 21 with Miss Reynolds in attendance to receive a money gift. Work from the meetings was on display and Lamch was served to mothers WMS members and the girls. At a recent Silver tea and candy sale the group realized $31.00.
The girls are organizing a rally at Russell set for April 29 to show support and raise awareness. Local organizers emphasize peaceful assembly and community participation.
