Community Happenings Highlight Local Events and Milestones

District residents report final exams and Easter holidays with relatives. A Theatre Committee Bingo Night awarded prizes to numerous women and local residents. A community meeting discussed turning Orange Hall into a Community Centre and planned repairs cost estimates. Golden Wedding celebrations welcomed by Minota families and friends.

Mrs Hanson returns home after winter with her daughter in Decker. Garth Sazaras, a Birtle teacher, spent Easter at home. Alan and Ian Tennant of Brandon visited the Ford Wiggins family. Gail Mitchell and John Mitchell went to Winnipeg for a Nurses Convention. Sharon Leland broke her right arm and is in Hamiota Hospital. We regret the accident and wish you a speedy recovery.

Isabella Mrs. Lewis Quinn and Betty and Glen of MacGregor spent Easter with Mrs. and Mr. Pie, and Bob Attwood visited Carman. Drama Club performed a one act play at the Community Centre with Ruth Teasdale and others. UCW held an April meeting at Mrs. Attwood’s with a panel on Youth in Transition and a Welsh boarding house anecdote from Grande Prairie.

Manitoba education plan expands high schools and enrolment

Manitoba reports three year school division plan boosts high school population to 44 535 with 6 276 in grade 12, up 69 percent since 1958 59. University of Manitoba enrolment up 1 082, rural divisions total high school population rises to 10 891. New buildings additions total 97 high schools 22 additions and 66 new elementary schools 64 additions. consolidation grows to 168 districts with 159 owned buses carrying 24 000 students and costing 893 000 for operations and 183 550 for purchases.

Silver Wedding Anniversary at Jim and Ross Home

A happy gathering marked the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ross at their home on Tuesday evening April 24. Friends and neighbors presented a pole lamp and shared a social meal after an address. Family members from Dropmore and Reeder attended, including Mrs. Ross's mother sister and brother and their families, Betty and husband with child, and Carol Anne.

Betty Kennedy named regular panelist on Front Page Challenge

Betty Kennedy, Toronto columnist and former Ottawa writer, becomes a regular panelist on CBC TV Front Page Challenge replacing Toby Robins who left after the 1960 61 season. Joining Pierre Berton and Gordon Sinclair under moderator Fred Davis, she will help identify headlines suggested by guest challengers.

Miniota Board Holds Special Meeting on School Conditions

A special Miniota board session on April 18 1962 at the Municipal Office involved deputy chairman D L Stewart presiding and attendance by most members except four. Inspector Funk joined Miniota and Beulah trustees to address crowded conditions and teacher issues with plans for a public Beulah meeting to discuss the elementary room situation.

Miniota Students Attend Pre College Clinic at Brandon College

A total of 292 students from 32 high schools joined the Brandon College Pre College Clinic and Seminar on Friday March 30. Miniota Collegiate attendees included Mary Rittaler Judy Leland Linda Leland and other students. Faculty members Dr J M Robbins Dean H S Perdue and others conducted testing and provided information on courses scholarships bursaries and loan funds to help planning for college education.
