Dormancy and control of green foxtail in western farming
U of Alberta scientist W H Vanden Born reports that green foxtail seed dormancy is broken by moist soil at 43 F for 3 to 6 weeks, enabling spring germination. Seedlings emerge from depths up to 3 inches. late-season emergence can still produce seeds. Cool temps and shade limit growth, making dense cereal stands suppressive. Proper soil incorporation of herbicides matters. ultraviolet glow tracking shows discing creates uneven coverage, while tilled or rolled methods improve distribution.
