First Nike Hercules test fire in Canada at Fort Churchill
A Nike Hercules first flight from Fort Churchill Manitoba occurred January 31 under subzero conditions. U S and Canadian army officials observed a direct intercept of a simulated target with Firebee drone replaced by a Sabre jet. Lt. Col. Joe Larkin and Major Vernon Gay led a Canadian and American team including Lieut. Chas Pachal. The test confirmed operational capability under extreme cold and demonstrated robust launch and guidance systems.
