Manitoba Hydro Applies for Churchill River Diversion Permit
Manitoba Hydro seeks permission from the Manitoba Water Control and Conservation Branch to divert up to eighty percent of Churchill River flow into the Lower Nelson River. The project would create a large Southern Indian Lake reservoir and redirect up to 50 000 cubic feet per second toward Nelson River at Split Lake, triggering resettlement of local communities and new water levels with dam and saddle dam constructions planned at Missi Falls Swan Bay and South Bay. Affected residents have formed a committee, obtained legal counsel, and a policy statement outlines Hydro’s responsibilities and ongoing community inventories and planning for relocation before lake level changes.
