Single District School Divisions Promoted in Manitoba Referendum

The 1966 spring session paved the way for a March 10 1967 vote in 33 divisions on creating single district school boards to oversee kindergarten through Grade XII. The government, backed by associations, surveys public meetings, and intends a unified board with one supervisory staff and no division boundaries, with timing for new boards starting April 1.

4H Public Speaking Held At Miniota

The Junior 4H Public Speaking contest took place in Miniota Collegiate Auditorium on Monday January 30. Top honors went to Brian Sytnyk McConnell with Elaine McConnell second and Barbara Leland third. Red ribbon recipients included Lucille Goodwin and Roberta Leland. Blue ribbon contenders were Wilna McConnell Brenda Leland Allan Hankin and Sandra Bonner. Judges Miss Moody and Norm Hemstead. The program featured piano by Mone Morton, a pentomine from Noreen Wadham and Patricia Kosternik, and Scottish pieces by Mr Cash on accordion.

Miniota U C W Meets with Firsts Mentioned in Service

Mrs A C Hill hosted the February meeting of the Miniota U C W afternoon unit with Mrs L Reynolds as president. Chas Ellerington led worship and the Canada study. The Anglican service was noted as first in many areas, and twelve members answered roll call. Mrs Westeland offered her home for the next meeting. Lunch was served.

Bible Presbyterial UCW Approve Plans for Meeting

Plans for the annual meeting of Birtle Presbyterial United Church Women to meet February 20 in Minnedosa were approved at the Presbyterial executive meeting. Mrs. W. W. Cochran presided. reports showed wide UCW outreach, a 1966 allocation of 12140 met, bursary fund support, and a Sparling Hall room furnish task completed at United College Winnipeg. Anglican observers from the Deavnery of Birtle were invited. Mrs. Willis Kieper and Mrs. David Dunn led opening worship.

C.G.LT. Girls Conclude Craft for Centennial Tea

The C.G.LT. girls completed their craft for the Centennial Tea to be held March 4 at the Miniota Community Centre. They attended World Day of Prayer last Friday at the Anglican Church and on Monday February 13 went to Isabella to hear a Zambian minister speak with slides shown.

Golden Age Club Held Regular Meeting

Beulah hall was decorated with Valentines for the Golden Age Meeting on Wednesday afternoon February 15. Forty one members attended despite the cold. Mrs. Chisholm welcomed guests and community singing was led by Mrs. Searth with Mrs. Dibblee at the piano. Duets by four school girls and a music contest provided merriment. Fourteen members including twins celebrate birthdays this month. corsages and boutonnieres were given. Lunch was served by three ladies. An invitation to hold the next meeting at Crandall on March 15 was extended. An antiques and Indian relics collection owned by Mr. Alley was on display.

Public Speaking Contest Held At Arrow River

The senior public speaking contest at Arrow River on Monday February 13 featured eight red ribbon participants and three judges from Brandon. Winners included Gary Lelond first, Glen Sytnyk second, Edward Lelond third, with Sheila Lelond and Sharon Lelond also placing. In the blue ribbon group were Noreen Wadham Miniota Bryn Sytnyk McConnell and Delbert Brown McConnell. Gary Lelond earned the Senior Public Speaking 4-H Cup and the top three speakers advance to further competition.

Miniota Ladies Bonspiel Results

Miniota hosts a bonspiel with awards for June Nichol Isabella Dora Clark and others. Prizes include table lamps cakes dishes mixing bowls and gifts. Grand Aggregate honors go to June Nichol and Isabella with trophies and thanks to sponsors and helpers.
