Birdtail River Board Sets Bus Staffing and Route Tenders

Birdtail River School Division 38 held a regular Crandall meeting on August 11 1977 with trustees present. The board adopted July 14 minutes, received the superintendent report, appointed bus drivers for September 7 and approved 1977 78 van tenders with numerous daily rates. Retenders were set for routes 7 9 and 25 and the board adjourned to August 25 at Crandall.

Farm Credit loans aid Manitoba farmers in 1976 77

The Farm Credit Corporation lent 25.6 million to Manitoba farmers and 301.4 million to Canadian farmers last year across 4,465 loans, a 53 percent drop from the prior year. Saskatchewan led borrower counts, with Ontario, Alberta, and Quebec following.

Marital Property Act Set To Take Effect January First

Winnipeg Attorney General Howard Pawley announces the Marital Property Act will come into effect January 1, 1978. The act creates joint ownership of assets acquired during marriage including the family home furniture and the family car. If the home is in one spouse name the other may register an interest by filing a caveat. Judges may vary asset division in extraordinary cases but rarely. Excluded are gifts inheritances trust benefits insurance proceeds and personal items. Commercial assets are not accounted for until separation or dissipation.

Manitoba Announces Second Phase of Job Creation Program

Manitoba will allocate up to 13 million dollars as a contingency to extend its job creation drive. Premier Schreyer notes Phase One created about 5,500 jobs and cut unemployment from 6.1 to 5.8 percent in July, forecasting ten thousand man-months of work and a 1 percentage point drop in Manitoba's jobless rate this winter. The plan stresses federal cooperation and continued municipal and northern development efforts.
