Alberta seeks Supreme Court reference on bank laws

Ottawa reports Alberta laws may be referred to the Supreme Court of Canada for constitutional validity. Prime Minister Mackenzie King asked Premier William Aberhart to facilitate a reference and refrain from enforcement pending the court’s opinion. The measures include bank licensing, court licensing penalties, and a Judicature Act amendment, with or without Aberhart’s consent. The federal government may refer statutes without provincial consent, and enforcement would pause only as the reference proceeds.
