Return from convention city prompt impressions of Chicago crowds
Dr L B Bacon of Pacific Junction describes his Chicago visit amid the Republican National Convention scenes. He notes police lines two blocks long for entry to the Coliseum, touts ticket prices from 50 to 150, and recalls friends waiting hours for a chance to attend. He witnessed rival headquarters and the overwhelming crush, calling the convention “the greatest thing going” despite the barriers and risks of counterfeit tickets. He traveled to meet his daughter Pearl from Alliance and shared observations with local townsfolk.

Beef cattle markets press full use of grass pastures
Five years ago Mills County and national beef herds were larger by about 15 percent. Three dry years, a severe winter, and last summer's drought have reduced numbers and fed selling pressure. Prices for fat cattle rose as feeders struggled, while stockers and calves remain scarce. Prospects point to a long, profitable beef boom if grass, silage, and pasture receive proper use. The piece also notes Iowa sales around $9.50 per cwt as top price of the year, with overall activity high but costs elevated.
