Beet sugar foes unite against tariff cut plan in Senate
A conference of Republican senators friendly to beet sugar decided to oppose a Cuban reciprocity tariff reduction. They pledged to vote for the House passage with the Morris amendment and resist further amendments, weighing two alternatives: drop the issue or accept the rebate plan. The meeting in Senator Elkins room estimated at least nineteen loyal senators, with Democrats counted for the House bill, totaling fifty two votes. The group pursued further coordination with Cuban-relations allies while rejecting mixed terms, aiming to unity against reciprocal measures.
