Ernest Walling, son of Garry Walling, lost an eye when a piece of clay thrown by his uncle Guy Walling in a brick yard accident struck him under the left eye. He was taken to Dr James Donelan for treatment. doctors aimed to prevent infection and protect the remaining eye.
The Mills County Masonic picnic at Emerson drew several hundred members from Glenwood Malvern Emerson Silver City Labor and Randolph lodges plus Malvern Emerson chapters. A full forenoon program featured sermons addresses and music with Judge W W Keysar delivering the main speech. The 2d year of the paper’s publication was noted with a collage of Vabor College pictures.
The Knights of Khorassan held an initiation with a wet afternoon parade canceled due to rain. New Arabs were welcomed at a banquet at the Commercial House after a caravan of camels and robed participants traveled to the oasis tent, with names including Glenwood, E. G. Millard, C. Dean, KH. DeWitt, L. B. Robinson, G. B. Miller and many others from Glenwood, Hastings, Pacific Junction and Council Bluffs.
The article notes a mandolin and violin recital at the opera house last Saturday by de Connell Blais Orpheus, with C. M. Maynard delivering recitations. The Retief Corps hosted a lap social for veterans and families, serving ice cream and cake. Glenwood Relief Corps urges eligible women to join, praising the group’s charitable work for the nation’s defenders.
The Christian church invites all to divine service Sunday morning and evening. Sunday school meets at 10 am. A sermon on Christ was tempted will be preached. Christian Endeavor at 7 pm. The 5 pm sermon will discuss Christ's words He that overcometh shall inherit all things. Join in worship.
The Institution added 44 acres east of the current buildings at 100 dollars per acre to the grounds. Orchestra members plan a trip to the State Pair in Des Moines. The Mitchleville reform school girls’ band is highlighted among top state bands.
In Wisconsin Madison residents and staff are traveling for summer breaks. Several faculty members, including Mrs. Murdock and Miss Daniels, return home to Michigan Chicago respectively. Supt Powell and Miss Kauble led the institution orchestra to Council Bluffs for graduation exercises at the deaf and dumb institution. Bert Hammond will oversee the boys on the farm after the start of duty.
