A Special Providence on the Nashville to Chattanooga Line
In the spring of 1864 a shifter train with guard troops and a wounded guerrilla narrowly escapes a derailment trap near a siding two thirds down the line. A violent storm and a miraculous open switch reversed by lightning save the crew as it thundered toward a steep grade, then a fusion of metal and fate seals the switch. The superintendent hints the event may be providential, not chance, and orders a post voyage inquiry.

Unusual marriage proposals told in old London scraps
A whimsical London tale recalls a shooting gallery marriage proposal where Anne Oakley style letters were fired as shots spelling will you marry me and the lady replied certainly not. Other feats include a waterfall Morse letter at Yosemite and a fireworks message costly and dramatic, amid ancient and courtly offers, each a quirky relic of romance.
